Hello… after 3 years running in Newtons and my last 2 pairs splitting at the seams inside of 50 miles, I thought it might be a good time to try a new brand… I have a flatter, wider foot… if you’ve had any luck with a shoe in particular would love to know what is working… thank you-
What distances are you looking for?
I use super feet blue for inserts (arch/ankle issues), but I do pronate. I currently have a pair of Mizuno Wave Musha 2’s as my racing flat and love them. I also have Puma Faas 300 for tempo/speedwork (neutral shoe but are fine with inserts), Zoot Advantage 3.0 (neutral for long runs…current favorite shoe). I loved the K-Swiss kwicky blade lights. I wore those for just about everything but a 5k. They are great on long distances.
Zoot Ovwa. I love them for training.
Zoot Ultra Tempo 5.0 for race day.
Hope this helps.
Brooks: ST5, Cadence, Flow (depending on how little stability you can go with.
I’ve run everything up to a marathon in the ST5 and Cadence. Started running in the Flows this spring and have hit 12-13 without issue. In fact as a sockless runner the Flows are BY FAR the most comfortable.
I have flat, slightly wide feet that cause some over pronation, and thus a stability shoe. For the last 3 1/2 years I’ve ran in Nike Structure’s(current model is # 15) with super feet insoles! Absolutely love them(current run the the 15’s, but have own 12,13, and 14 as well). I’ve gotten at least 300 + miles on every pair so far!
I love my Adidas Adistar Tempos. Just got some Asics Gel Noosa Tri 7s that are pretty nice too, but a little heavy.
I wear Mizuno Inspires for longer races and Mizuno Wave Elixir to race in.
I wear Brooks Adrenaline for every type of distance running and racing. Tried several other brands but nothing felt as good as brooks. I was fitted on a treadmill right before my first marathon and am very happy I did.
Thank you for all of the suggestions… ended up trying almost all that were mentioned… ended up taking a shot on Broooks ST5 and the Zoot Tempo… really liking the zoots so far…
hey jamo.
how’s the toe box on the tempo? there’s a certain spot between my big toe and arch on the side of my foot that gets a nice blister if i dont wear 2E shoes.
the entire platform is on the wide side, toe box feels just right for my flatter wider feet…
Adidas Tempos are great, I’ve had a million pairs. However, they are undergoing a major redesign this year, we’ll see how the new version is.
A few that I have liked over the past couple years:
Mizuno Musha (probably the “raciest” but I love the fit and feel of this shoe)
Brooks ST5 (higher drop)
New Balance 1190 (higher drop)
Saucony Mirage (low drop)
I have compared a lot of the shoes mentioned here in a previous post. Personally didn’t like the Brooks Pure Cadence or Mizuno Elixir. KSwiss Kwicky Blade didn’t have the right support for me and Zoot Ovwa was really sloppy on my foot.
DS Trainers are supposedly in this category, but it feels like they are sort of moving toward a stability shoe.
I really love the new DS Racer.
This used to be such an easy question for me to answer till frigging New Balance took my favorite shoe off the market: the NB 901, 902, 903, 904, 905, then 90nada. Why do all shoe companies do this crap. Currently running in the 890, don’t like it (no stability) so thanks for posting, hopefully, I’ll get some good suggestions.
I used the 905 for a while. 1190 is a good shoe and worth a try. Less stability than the 905, but I like that the stack was lower and the sole was more flexible, which I found put less torque on my ankles.
I have flat wide feet and have found New Balance to be best for me. The 860v2 has been great as well as the 870v2 (just took a few runs to get used to). Saucony Hurricanes have also worked well for me. Good luck!
MFriendly, what have you found the main difference between the 860v2 and the 870v2? I’m wearing down a pair of 860s that I’ve liked a lot, and I’m wondering if I should consider moving to the 870s or stay with the same?
2 oz. lighter is the main difference to me (with the 870 being lighter). I’d say there is a bit more support in the 860 but the 870 is plenty comfortable. I believe there is an 860v3 coming out in early 2013 so look out for that as well.
