Favorite meal replacement/liquid meal?

I hate eating in the morning, but need something before I go out for a long training ride or run. What are your favorite liquid meals/shakes/powders/smoothies? Thanks!

skim milk, low fat creamy rice, manuka honey, banana…

Super yummy!

hey kiwipat, what’s “low fat creamy rice?” Is this an instant rice or a rice you boil? Sounds like something I’d like to try but I bet it’s a different name in the states.

For early morning workouts I usually wake up extra early and eat a clifbar with some water and am back asleep 5 min later. Or just a quick shot of gel (yes it sucks but Hammer Espresso ain’t bad) and some water before I head out.

My fav smoothie for afterwards or meal replacement is: 1 frozen banana, a cup or so skim milk, 1 scoop PB, 1 scoop Optimum Nutrition (ON) vanilla ice cream protein (this stuff is awesome and you can get it at GNC), and a tbsp or two ground flax seed. Blend.

I also used to use Champion Metabolol Endurance, or something like that. It’s a pre-workout smoothie type drink. The orange flavor was pretty good. After Champion sold off Cytomax the Metabolol stuff was hard to find.

I’ve heard of a lot of people who take Hammer Sustained Energy or Perpetuem before an early workout. Not the tastiest but the stuff works great.

Tinned rice, kind of a desert thing. The brand I like is ‘Aunt Betty’s Creamy Rice’. They sponsor a tri series here and they were making shakes after a race one day and I had about 6 of the suckers…VERY nice.

Of course, now I get crap at home for the amount of space my rice takes up, but that is another story…

OH, I know what that is, I made fun of my gf’s mom for buying a whole case of the stuff, then she found out it had a teensy bit of cholesterol and unloaded it on me. Turned to to be addictively good. Will try it in a smoothie, Thanks!

Myoplex Vanilla Cream. Pre-mixed. More expensive because it is pre-mixed and shipping water is expensive. And you can get “lite”, with fewer carbs, if you want something for meals during the day when you are not training.

Very Yummy.

you also might try spiz…delicious!

1% milk does me good. A Litre is ~700 calories.

I like to use Champion Nutrition Met Endurance-Mountain Raspberry flavor before my workouts. Very easy on the stomach and just the right amount of calories. I think like 180. It is so yummy and I look forward to drinking it before my workouts.

After I’m done i often drink the Met 2 which is more of a meal replacement. I like the Orange Smoothie flavor. I really like the products because they all seem to taste so good.

You should check out the website and read about them.

If you want to order call 1-800-225-4831 ask for Brook, tell him Loren referred you. He is awesome and will take great care of you!

Plain old Ensure works fine for me and has for years. Buy it by the case at Costco.

Aloha,

Larry

My standard pre-race, pre-IM, pre-training meal is always the same: 2 ensure really cold + 2 balance bars. Quick, easy, sits well, is about 1000 cals, and seems to work for me.

I’m an Ensure man as well … especially now they have the nice plastic bottles instead of cans.

I’ve used a couple of carb “shake/smoothie” type drinks from GNC, they taste like vomit and don’t look much better. They also gave me acne in really wierd spots.
I prefer to stick with something in food format, protien cookies, power bars, ect…

Oh God, maybe I should be asking what NOT to buy? Ze G., do you know what brands/flavors tasted like vomit?

Lemon Lime, generally Chocolate and Vanilla are to be avoided also. Not a big fan of their berry flavors either.
The first time I started using it I got some really wierd zits on my back/top of my shoulder blades. They lasted for a couple of weeks, then I stopped using the stuff and they went away a couple days later. I also had some wierd ones show up on my pecks. They’d be there for a day, pop, then go away the next day. Really wierd stuff. I don’t use it much anymore.

Before a race or long training run/ride - 3 scoops of Sustained Energy and 1-2 scoops of Endurolyte powder. Settles the stomach, never felt like I was going to bonk and have not had any ill effects. Great stuff from Hammer Gel. My friend says it takes like baby formula - no comments please.

After workout - 3 scoops MetRx whey protein, banana or other fresh fruit, Stoneyfield Farms yogurt and some fruit juice.

Usually try to do soy protein before/during training/racing and whey protein after. Soy seems to absorb settle better before during than whey protein does.

Costco sells a big bag of frozen mixed berries. Use those, yogurt, a scoop of protein powder and some soy milk. Yum.

Your recipe sounds good! But tinned rice? Aunt Betty? Creamy rice? Is that like rice pudding that they sell over there? Do you know or does anyone else know if they sell something like that in the states? I’m getting all excited about shakes, smoothies, you name it!
