Hello All:
I’ll be in Las Vegas for several days week after next. I’d very much appreciate any advice on ~2hr rides I can do that are a short drive from town. The more climbing the better.
Thanks,
Jim
RMT loop (30 min drive), red rock/blue diamond (rideable from the strip but nicer to start from summerlin), and you can turn Charleston into a good loop as well as there are two ways up/down
.
Red Rock Loop, for sure. Bring $7 for entry to the park and you will experience a hard, but beautiful15 mile climb up to ~ 5,000’.
Red Rocks. Valley of Fire, Lake Meade. Tons of great riding out there.
I´m headed to vegas tomorrow and trying to decide whether to bring my bike. Staying at the Hilton/Flamingo. Is it a pain to get off the strip?
Can’t say for certain. When I was there to ride we stayed in a house closer to Red Rocks. It was a 50 mile loop from the front door.
Alta is a good route to head out towards red rock. Use strava to figure out the best way to get to Alta from your hotel, I rode out to red rock from the Renaissance beside the convention Center and it wasn’t too bad - first and last 3 miles were the worst
Take a look at these. They aren’t exactly a short drive but none are more than maybe 40 minutes away from the strip. There is construction on the Potosi climb. It wasn’t bad a couple of weeks ago, but I hear they have signs up now to discourage riding.

Leave early - traffic sucks and lots of tourists looking at all kinds of stuff. Head on out to the Hoover Dam. A great ride past Lake Mead and back.
Red Rock Canyon is beautiful, but only a 15 mile loop and getting out of the city north to there isn’t fun (traffic, stoplight to stoplight, etc.)
I just did the gran fondo route. Very fun but there was that construction - only mayne a mile but its barricades and single lane. People arent happy youre there. Other than that, I had wide open spaces and very nice roads.
There is another vegas thread on here with a link to the route.
If you are riding from the Hilton/Flamingo, you can cross the Strip and go through Caesars, and straight up Twain. Bike Lane all the way out to Summerlin, from which you can go up Town Center to Charleston, and out to Red Rocks. Will take you around 45-60 minutes depending on traffic, and it’s a slight uphill the whole way. Easy enough to see on the map. So if you’re looking for a long ride, do that, then out to the Loop (15-20 minutes), the Loop itself (45-60 min likely), and back and you’re set for the day. If not, a cab will cost you $20-30 bucks out to Red Rock Casino.
You may also want to check out Las Vegas Cyclery, they’re a great shop and have good rentals. They may have a pickup service. www.lasvegascyclery.com
Enjoy!
Thanks. That more or less worked. I survived anyway, I´ll probably leave the bike at home next time.
