Who cares right? But…for silly time-wasting thread sake, long/short course or mid-length, Hawaii-only or all other Ironman swims combined, single top performance or other factors…who is the fastest in triathlon swimming? All time. We have current Hawaii IM record holder Lars Jorgenson, or Andy Potts…take into account too that Lars didn’t have speedsuits back then either. Sanson brothers? (sp…?), anyone have stats or opinions on who–if you lined them all up, statistically would be the fastest swimmer in triathlon? Obviously some would not count because they haven’t done halfs or IM…we’re talking those who have done all distances. I know…a wasteful time debate. But it’ll get some responses from those who like to debate. Personally in IM, I think Lars at his best would regularly kick the snot out of Potts in the swim.
I think Jon Flanagan would be up there.
Personally, I may have to give the nod to Potts. He has been succesfull at multiple distances, and while other guys have gone faster in the swim leg(I think Sibberson holds the Ironman record), they haven’t backed that up in the rest of the race like Potts has.
MarkyV is up there on the list…
Lars Jorgensen for sure. He was ranked 4th or 5th in the world in the 1500 when he set that record. He’s a sub-15min 1500 LCM swimmer. He’s probably the best swimmer to ever race triathlons, given his relative swim pedigree.
Javier Gomez - 15:35 (IIRC) for 1500 SCM at Spanish Nat’l champs - and Potts are probably the fastest swimmers in the sport today, with both Brownlee and one of the Russians - Vasiliev? - being right up there as well.
Ben Sanson would be up there as well, but like Craig Walton, I believe Ben is a better open water swimmer than pool swimmer.
Bill Daniell is among the fastest. He was fastest in IM NZ 2009 and IM CDA 2008, third in IM SG 2010. I may have the years incorrect. Find him doing swim video analysis and coaching in Tucson and at Grasky Endurance Coaching’s clinics and camps.
Jan Sibbersen (Germany)
2008 - IM Canada swim time 45:57
2006 - IM Canada swim time 47:57
2006 - IM USA swim time 45:24
2004 - IM GERMANY swim time 42:17
2003 - IM HAWAII swim time 46:50
2003 - IM GERMANY swim time 44:29
There’s many more race results… just google and you will find
In the pool is one thing, open water another. No doubt every person mentioned is top notch. I would like to have seen John Kenny (pro triathlete) (US Team Open Water) race at the IM distance. (not sure if he has). He would hang right in w/Potts in an olympic. I think he would be able to put the hurt on at IM.

Considering MarkyV beat Kenny out of the water by 40 seconds at Eagleman, I highly doubt it.

Also, no disrespect to Bill Daniell, but how can you include him as an all time best when he came 3rd out of the water at CdA?

Hayley Peirsol has a 1500m time faster than Gomez…15.57 LCM. Was fastest in the world at the time. Only third women in the world to go under 16mins.
I think she would have to be the fastest swimmer to do triathlons, when talking about both sexes.

You include him if you are trying to sell his coaching services at your camps, that’s how.

Absolutely. In general, the quality of female swimmers in triathlon is much higher than for men. Shelia Taormina - Olympic medalist in the pool (relay) & ITU world champion. But Peirsol is definitely - on a relative basis as a swimmer compared to other swimmers - the best to race triathlon.
Craig Walton
.
Sara McLarty.
is hot.
Oh…fastest triathlon swimmer…I"ll be original and go with Andy Potts
Nod to Wolfgang Dietrich. He may not be the fastest ever, but he did have a good string
of fastest IMH swim primes, and I like his name.
Chris Hinshaw?

Actually not the fastest in the world at that time as she was second place in that race…
Hard to argue against Lars, but he’s nowhere near the level of a complete triathlete as most of the other names mentioned.

Ambulance chasing at its best.

So one has to ask who’s worse, the ambulance chaser? Or the coach who’s in such dire need of attention that he combs the forum, continually pointing out the shortcomings of others because he can’t possibly rely on the lack-luster results of his athletes to give him credibility? hmmmmm…
May want to step down from that self-appointed pedestal & look in the mirror one of these days Paulo.
