Time to buy some new tires, I have been using the Conti Ultra Race tire 700 x 23. They have been pretty durable. Any recommendations for a tire that may be faster without losing the durability factor or should In stick with the Conti?
Thanks

If you like Contis…try the GP4000**S **(“Schwarz”, or "Black Chili)…and for even more speed, some latex tubes inside ![]()
I am a big fan of the Michelin Pro Race tires 2’s and 3’s. This is Michelin’s top of the line clincher tire, but it’s also extraordinarily durable.
I banged along today over 5K of lousy gravel roads in the middle of now where on my ride today and the Pro race 3’s look none the worse for wear after that.
Well - you just had the 2 “likely” best recommendations. I like the PR3s best as well.
thanks guys
.
I got 4000km on a set of vittoria evo cx clinchers, about half of that was commuting. Only ever got 2 flats in the entire time.
Are these only for training, or are you planning on racing on them too? If it’s only for training, go with a set of 25c Contis with the black chili compound. I typically run straight over glass for 8 miles on my way to work and I’ve been flat-free for three months.

I also vote for Michelin PR3s. They are fast, especially with a latex tube. I train and race with them. They seem a bit more resistant to cuts than the PR2s, although I think they are great tyres too.
You’ll hear about as many people raving about the GP4000S tyre as the PR3. You won’t go to far wrong with either.
FWIW, I’ve had 2 punctures in about 4500miles on GP4000S tyres and one of those was the valve breaking in the back of my car on the way home from a race!
I also have conti 4000’s. What brand of latex tubes do you use for racing? Also, what increase in speed would you estimate latex makes?
Thanks

9mph!
for a realish answer, go to biketechreview.com
check out the rolling resistance tests
compare the butyl tube ones to the latex tube ones
then do some math
How durable do you need? I was pretty happy with the Michelin Lithion’s durability on a cross country bike tour. We rode on Interstates and US highways, which were covered in nails, glass, and thin steel wire section from truck tires. I’ll agree that the Pro2/3Race and the GP4000s are great tires, but for bigger guys riding on poor roads, they just aren’t durable enough in my experience. Fantastic race day tires on a swept course, but poor for training, touring, or racing on dirty roads.
GP4000’s by far for a race tire, wont cut nearly as easy as the PR2’s or PR3’s, idealy Id rock two sets of tires though, get some gatorskins or Bonti makes the RXL hardcase and then the GP4000’s or PR3’s if just for racing, not a huge investment, but worth it…

A word of caution to folks in this thread…when talking about these tires, make SURE you’re referring to the “Black Chili” version of the GP4000, i.e. the GP4000S
There’s a significant difference in rolling resistance between the regular GP4000 tire (typically colored, BUT there is a black version) and the “Black Chili” GP4000**S **model.
For latex tubes, I typically run the Vredestein’s (the best way I’ve found to acquire them is to have my LBS order them from the US distributor, Veltec), or the Michelin latex tubes. I find the Michelins to be not quite as “durable” as the Vreds (for some reason the rubber in the Michelins tends to “dry out” over time.)
edit: mistakenly wrote “Vittoria” when I meant “Michelin”.
what’s your experience with michelin latex tubes?
any better? any worse?

Doh! I wrote Vittoria above when I meant Michelin…sorry! I’ll edit above…
have been doing some looking for tires and am confused which i should be looking at/which tire you have been referring to…
i know the 4000 S has been mentioned in this thread, but so has Conti 4000 Black Chili…
Conti GP 4000 S or
Conti GP Triathlon - Black Chili
here’s a link to World Tri to clarify. http://www.worldtri.com/Bicycle_Tires_s/43.htm

If it says “Black Chili” either in the name or the description…you’re good to go ![]()
I haven’t seen any data on that “GP Triathlon” tire yet though…

Just to confuse things further: the black version (only the black version - not any of the colors) of the GP4000 contains Black Chili also. Strangely enough, the packaging has a small “Black Chili” label on the top, but the tire itself has no indication. I guess it’s a stealth strategy.

According to biketechreview you are sacrificing 3.2W to the top clincher on there and possibly more to another clincher not on there yet per tire. There is no other clincher that is closest to the top that has decent flat prevention?
