Curious what constitutes a clydesdale and what the record in Hawaii is for a clydesdale?
for men its 200lbs and above. they dont have a clydesdale section at IM Hawaii.
The RD can determine the minimum classification for a Clyde. Some races are as low as 185 and as high as 225. For IM’s 190 is the low end and as mentioned, there is no Clyde division for Hawaii. There have been Clydes there, but they have to qualify in their AG to get there. Don’t know what the times were though.
Bump.
Now that I am aware that there is no clydesdale category at IMH, I am curious how fast some of the men have gone that are over 180 lbs.
All the fast guys are below 165 it seems (and as low as 140…yikes!). Are there any guys over 180lbs that have gone under 9 hours?
At IM NZ 2001 a Clydesdale guy (+90kg, I believe) was pretty quick. Dicko can confirm if he’s checking this thread.

The IMNA sites list results for the people who identify themselves as Clydes (190 lbs) - check the bottom of the results form.
Assuming the top few would have qualified, you could look up thieir names on the IMHI results at ironmanlive.com and see how they fared in Kona.
Well I did a 9-45-06 at 191 lbs in Kona last year, but 191 lbs is not a “true” clydesdale. Some races use 190+, or indeed use 185-199 as the “lightweight” clydesdale category. I’m sure you’ll find several guys close to or even under 9 hrs who are over 185, but looking at the guys coming the other way at the turnaround last year, I’d be surprised if any bona-fide Clydesdales are getting close to 9 hrs.
I found these results from IM Canada. http://www.ironman.ca/results/2004/can2004clyres.html
At just over 180lbs The Big Danes have gone under 9 hours at IMH, but i think that they would object fiercely to be called Clydesdales
- they are Lean and Mean.
Peter Sandvang, Comp. weight approx 83kgs/183LBS - 194cm IMH 2001= 8 hours 37min (first off in T2), 7th place
Thorbjoern Sindballe, Comp. weight approx 82kgs/181LBS - 191cm IMH 2004 8 hours 58min ( 2nd fastest bike in Pro ranks) , 6th place (well, 5th after the Belgian guy got caught on dope)
I agree, most “true” Clydes will not come near a sub 10h IM. I don’t want to open a can of worms about what makes a “true” Clydes or why the division even exists(for the record, I am 6’4" and 220). I don’t harbor any delusions that I will ever make it to HI through anything other than a lottery spot. I have done two IM’s and they were both right around 14h, so I am not a threat to anyone in the 30-34 AG who wants to qualify for HI. I am doing IMAZ and am pretty sure that the 30-34 AG will be safe of this Clyde putting in a qualifying time.
