Fast charging EVs

Tesla won’t need to be broken up. They won’t be leading EV sales in 5 years.

Out of curiosity, who do you think is going to be the next EV leader in US in 5 years and how far down is Tesla going to drop?

In my opinion, if Tesla manages to produce the $25K car, as per Elon’s stated plan, I don’t see any legacy automaker able to dethrone Tesla in 5 years.

I’d like to know too. VW and GM are both targeting one million global EV sales by 2025. Tesla is already there. And that’s before the Texas and Berlin factories have even started production.

They claim to be able to fully charge any EV in 15 minutes.

That’s absolute BS. That is not a true statement. There are EVs on the road now that simply don’t have the thermal management to charge that quickly. It’s physics. There’s no magic. You can’t just shove more current into a vehicle to get it to charge as fast as you want.

Are there combinations of vehicle and charger that could get the vehicle up to 80% (which is sometimes considered “full” w.r.t. to fast charging because the last 20% can take as long as it takes to get from 20-80%) in 15 minutes, sure.

Probably coming from the inventor of the 5cal 4h energy drink and the ride an hour on this and power your home for 24h…sake understanding of physics.

This reminds me a bit of news paper articles which say “doing or eating X will burn twice as much fat” and then when you actually read the study it isn’t remotely close to what the head lines say.

Having worked on ABB drive/process/control for about 10 years I would say they are kind of the shit, if you’ve ever been skiing in Europe or North America chances are that ABB got you to the top safely…and that’s a very tiny part of their business.

Building a source output of 360kw or say 4x90kw isn’t particularly news worthy IMO. Like others have said the problems/logistical challenges are on either side, cars and or secondary distribution (1500amps…)

I’d put my money on Ford passing them first. No clue who the leader will be down the road but Toyota would be a good bet.

Maybe my research is incomplete, but from what I’ve read VW’s EV investment is considerably more than Ford or Toyota. Toyotas investment is actually kind of pathetic considering their size and their CEO has made public anti-ev statements.

I don’t think Tesla is really gonig to “drop”…others will just pick up market share more quickly.

I don’t know what Tesla is going to do for a $25K car. They don’t eve sell the standard range Model 3 anymore.

I’d be all in for Model 3 with an interior like the Bollinger truck. No big screen, no gee-gaws. No cameras or fancy sensors. Just a few big analog dials and satisfying physical swicthes. A cloth interior you can hose down. Sitting in a Bollinger was like a breath of fresh air to me vs. sitting in a Tesla which is like being a miniature person sitting in iPhoneland.

But the Bollinger itself is just too much car for my daily driving.

I don’t know how much Tesla could cut the Model 3 price by cutting out all the tech crap and just making a…car.

On the mass market side VW. Their initial cars have been nothing special but the battery and charging tech they are developing could be game changing. Their build quality is already better than Tesla

On the luxury side Mercedes is very impressive. The cars Mercedes announced 2 weeks ago are equal to Tesla performance wise but will have significantly better build quality.

I hate cars.

It’s like someone said:

"Cars are the ultimate invention of the industrial age- dirty, community destroying, health destroying, alienating - garbage from some Dickensian dystopia.

True- electrifying the garbage (with 25% renewables) IS a little better!!!
But only a little.

Most people live a manageable bike ride, bus, car pool or tele-commute from wherever.
Most people want and need exercise and need to get out!!

Why not fetishize that.

I hate cars.

Where do you live? Since you said you hate cars I assume you don’t have one.

The technology going into EVs benefits electric bikes and public transportation. The technology even helps improve electricity production and storage, which benefits renewable energy.

Why would I hate something that doesn’t effect me?

I don’t know what that answer means. It couldn’t be more vague. I asked where you lived and if you have a a car.

I hate cars.

Simple AND cheap solutions already exist.

People just don’t want to use them.

You increase fuel economy and
add more renewables- people just buy bigger cars, drive further, and more often.

Sting said: “There is no political solution for our troubled evolution.”

I say there is no “technological solution for our alienation. On the contrary, the tech just makes it worse and worse.”

I am being a bit of a pain in the ass.

Obviously- a Tesla is BETTER than an F150.
But it’s still no match for a modest, sensible life.

I don’t know what that answer means. It couldn’t be more vague. I asked where you lived and if you have a a car.

I do bicycle commute and do about 70% of the other stuff without a car.

But I wouldn’t hate cars if they didn’t personally waste my time and money and mess with my life in direct ways.

I live in endless suburban sprawl.

I definitely here the call to:

“Keep driving around in circles, endlessly around the infinite suburban sprawl- and hey it’s good for the environment because it’s high tech and 20% renewables.”

I love my cars but don’t like the rest.

I bike commute to work 75% of the time when I used to go to work. Haven’t gone full bore bike living by using a cargo bike to get groceries or take my kids where they need to get to.

My next car will be electric and since 100% of my electricity comes from non-carbon sources I will love that car even more.

I hate cars.

If you study history, they would burn so much coal it would turn into a black fog and kill thousands of people. That doesn’t happen anymore because of technology and regulation.

In my lifetime, they used to put lead in gas and the smog turned the air into a brown soup. That doesn’t happen as much anymore because of technology and regulation.

EVs aren’t the solution for everything, but it’s something. And I’m glad that it’s being adopted, much sooner than many predicted.

Tesla only sold half a million cars last year. They are on pace for more this year, but through Q2, only 386k.
It’s only a matter of time until a major company passes them. It might be this year even.

Through Q2, VW has sold 332k electric cars.

On the mass market side VW. Their initial cars have been nothing special but the battery and charging tech they are developing could be game changing. Their build quality is already better than Tesla

Looks like VW still considers Tesla ahead of the competition. Here’s an article from today’s Businesses Insider about how VW CEO’s called yesterday a crisis meeting to discuss Tesla. I could not find the English version but Chrome auto translate does a good job.
https://www.businessinsider.de/wirtschaft/kampf-gegen-gruenheide-vw-chefs-wollen-wolfsburger-stammwerk-radikal-umbauen-um-gegen-tesla-und-china-cars-zu-bestehen-a/

Here are a few excerpts from the meeting:

*Tesla, but also the many new Chinese manufacturers, produce cheaper and faster. The quality of their vehicles is getting better and better and has now reached European standards. *

Future competition with Tesla’s new Gigafactory will be brutal. The electric car pioneer sets new standards in car production. For example, a Model 3 is built in 10 hours, more than 3 times as fast as a VW ID.3 in Zwickau. This puts Tesla in another dimension in terms of productivity and profitability.

The Texas factory is really going to be on another level. Not only will it be one of the largest factories in the world but it will be using several new technologies. For example, it will use the largest metal casting machines in the world. Those machines could eliminate hundreds of parts and welds. This should lead to much faster production while at the same time significantly improving quality.

The sheer size of the whole thing is crazy!

The design of cities and availability of cycling infrastructure is really a barrier to widespread adoption of cycling. I would love to do more by bike, but traffic, my living situation, available bike parking at most of my regular destination, etc are all things that make is less appealing.

I think a lot more people would want to cycle of they had a nice place to keep their bike if they lived in an apartment, had a safe route that is physically separated from cars along the entire route, and had a decent place to park their bikes at their destination.

I admire people who cycle as their main method of transportation, but in so many cities you have to be a warrior to do that. It’s no wonder not many people do.
