F&%$(&^ Crash! Just before F%$@!$* Race!

I’ve been planning on doing the half Iron in Cranbrook (border of BC / Alberta in the Rockies) this weekend for some time now - got my entry in back in February - spent the last few days loading the camping gear etc etc - all set and ready to go - last night I set up my bike with race wheels, brake pads for the carbon rims, carbon seat post etc etc - and of course a good clean and tune…took it for a spin this morning to stretch out my legs and check everything is running ok. I was supposed to be an easy 60 min leg stretch and 5 mins from home my chain popped off at the start of a small hill…and I went down like sack of potatoes!! No bad road rash but my left knee hit the angel of the pavement pretty darn hard and now I have bump the size of a damn egg on my knee cap - oh and did I mention it hurts like a %^$&*()&^%#!!! Can’t bend the knee - been sitting with ice on it for the last hour - taken anti inflams - any other suggestions…??? While not an A Race for me it I’d hate to miss it at this late stage

While icing it, compress the knee with a wrap/gauze. This will keep the swelling from turning into a golfball.

Thanks - to late though - had the golf ball before even getting home!! Man this sucks!!

my husband broke his toe on a rock in the choptank river the day before the eagleman half ironman last year.

he was so ticked off about the last-minute injury that he posted a personal best on the course.

be sure you won’t make the injury worse by racing on it, then use your rage as fuel. good luck!

Crap that totally sucks… I am coming to Crany as well. It looked like you were pretty serious competition with all the carbon gear you own, I’m glad my spys have worked their magic to take you out of the race

If you ice the crap out of it and maybe get some prescription Anti-Inflams, hopefully it’ll clear up enough to race? Make sure you didn’t crack anything though.

If you decide to come out, I’ll be at Peckhams lake at 11am tomorrow morning for a light swim, run, bike. Let me know if you want to meet. I’m the dude that looks like a hoodlum with two other geeky looking guys.

If you can’t race, you could volunteer, Charlie could always use an experienced racer as a volunteer. It’s going to be a good race, with Kevin Cutjar being the man to beat. You could still get a good camping trip out of it though eh ? That’s really crappy about the knee though.

If you don’t have any issues w/ Advil(NsAID’s) pop em like candy.
Ice and compress liking Viking said. You’d be surprised how quickly that can subside.
Just lay off until a day or two before the race.

Disregard the above if you’re over 60 yrs old. : )

Good Luck dude

I’ll be stopping at every gas station along the way to get a new bag of ice - only leaving vancouver tonight with all the other lemmings trying to get away for the long weekend so I won’t make your swim offer tomorrow - volenteer is a good suggestion thanks
.

Under 60 and have already started the “candy” - going to try and get into the doc to get something stronger!! Thanks

OK, I’ll see you at the Carbo load dinner then… if you see Kevin out on the drive up here at a gas station of something, tell him the race was cancelled please.

Hope you can race.

Don’t you mean LANCE-ing Crash!!! Just before LANCE-ing Race!!

Seriously good luck in the event, I’m sure adrenaline will kick in and magically pain-free.

Didnt you mean

Lance Crash!!! Just before Lance Race!!

That sucks man…

How’s the bike! LOL.

That’s bad luck but look on the bright side - didnt break any bones or end up in hospital.

Drugs, ice and a bit of luck is about all you can do. Otherwise enjoy the long weekend

You’re right - that sucks
.

minor chip in the new paint job - had ice for 4 hrs today - Doc gave me some “fast acting” anti inflam - didn’t read the label just followed his instruction - he is of the opinion there is no damage and just some fluid from the bursa - says with Ice / anti inflam should be good to go on Sunday - if it is still swollen tomorrow he suggests draining it - however being 10 hr from the race site we are leaving tonight - again $$^&()^%$#%&()!!!
.

Why you wask? BEcause god hates you is why. I hear ya two weeks to placid my frame cracked, fortunately frame replacable, knee is not. All the best tho. Some of my best times have been on races where something went wrong th week before. IMLP included, while i did not do anything liek expected i still pb’d
hang in there boet.

sounds like you are on the right path with ice and NSAIDs, keep that up until tomorrow (Saturday) night. I think it will have to be a race morning decision as to whether you can race or not on it. If the swelling has gone down and the mobility is there, then toe the line. But if on the bike it starts stiffening up, I wouldn’t attempt the run. Keep the big picture in mind.

Yup - that’s the though process Mike - never DNF’d a tri and only once in a run - 60km into a 90km “race” and perhaps would prefer to DNS than DNF
.

Shaun… didn’t see your name in the results… did you not end up coming up for the race ?? Did you volunteer ? Is was a HOT day out there.

How is the knee ?
