Extra Wide Treadmills

I’m searching for an extra wide treadmill. My current TM is 20 inches wide and I’m aware the 22-inch wide Sole TM’s (these seem to be about as wide as I can find commercially available). Ideally, I’d like to find something that’s at least 26 inches wide that is not insanely expensive.

Why the need for such a wide treadmill? I have a True PS100 - also 22" wide, which seems like plenty.

I’ve done a little more research and there are a few manufactures that do make wider treadmills but they tend to cost over $10,000. Woodway’s performance models - the pro and pro xl are 28" wide. Also Tuff Tread and VacuMed make treadmills that can be used for rollerskiing. The cheapest VacuMed machine starts at $15,000 with a running surface of 40" x 79".

Back in the late 90’s Image (a now defunct TM manufacturer) made something called the Wide Stride DUO 48. It was a 48" wide treadmill that was designed for two people to run on simultaneously.

Place two treadmills side by side.

I “have” a Wwodway and love it. I use quotes because no one at my office gym realizes how good/nice it is and they use one of the 10 other standard treadmills. I’ve literally never seen anyone else use it.

I like the idea of roller skiing on a treadmill, but how the heck do you pole plant without ripping up the belt…or are you talking “legs only”? Just interested in your use case. Roller skiing at the best of times is pretty dangerous so taking it indoors especially hill climb sessions could be awesome (not that it matters to me now, since I can’t skate ski anymore due to an accident at IM Switzerland 2011…not enough motor control in my left leg).

Imagine being TRAPPED on the SAME treadmill!!!

I hear you - I can’t image ever doing this.

I hear you - I can’t image ever doing this.

Not that this would apply to anyone on this thread, but while you can race the guy on the treadmill beside you, the most annoying thing is when they are on the spin bike beside you and doing an eighth of a turn every time the instructor says half turn and you’re trying to virtually race that person knowing they are cheating and getting credit for the same stupid workout! At least on the treadmill you can have the moral high ground over running 5.1 mph when the other person is at 4.9 pm. Yeah Yeah, raise your hands if this does not apply to you…as I suspected in the entire ST forum there are no hands up!

I try not to worry too much about what the other guy does and do my own thing. But it makes me chuckle to see the following:

  1. Guy next to me sets the tmill to 12 mph, then jumps on and sprints for 5, yes FIVE seconds. Does this about every two minutes or so for about twenty minutes in total.

  2. Guy tries to match my speed or better, but keeps the incline at 0%. I race lots of hills, so I am used to an incline of 2-3%. When I drop down to 0% and beat his speed by almost 2 mph, he quickly warms down and slinks off.

  3. Guy gets on, matches or beats my speed, but only runs a mile and stops. Puffs out his chest and walks away while I continue with my remaining 12 miles.

And my ALL time favorite:

  1. The treadmill dancer. Can’t run for sh*t so decides to do stupid gymnastics and dance moves right next to me on the tmill. Occasionally hops off and jumps and skips up and down the aisle. I strongly resist the urge to step off and unplug her machine mid-frolic.

I could get my bad classic form dialed right in with that thing in the basement

Treadmills are used a lot on the higher level of xc-skiing. It is used for technique, intervals or for testing.
