I was watching PrimeTime live and saw a segment on the new Anti-aging pill that is getting a lot of press these days called protandim. Yeah we all know about antioxidants but I was curious how this pill might apply to endurance athletes who experience exercise induced oxidative stress from all of the extra O2 we are taking in our systems. There may be something to this pill and recovery after long endurance events. What do you think?
I saw this too and had the same thought. I was going to give it a try, then I checked their website and learned that it is $50 per bottle of 30, a 30 day supply.
A bit too expensive for my supplement tastes.
I looked up their web site and read their annual report after my sig other tried to convince me to buy the pills. they have not (because it is a supplement not a drug) had any “real” scientific trials, only a couple of their own studies with volunteers.
Also wonder about the measurement of what they call “oxidative stress” - is there a standard, accepted way to measure this and is it even commonly accepted as an indicator of anything?
Like lots of dietary supplements that promise weight loss, firmer thighs, more hair, longer or harder you know what, I’m skeptical.
Not to say there’s no validity, just not willing to believe their claims at face value with no independent validation.
I agree, I think more research needs to be done like with most other supplements. They even say on the website it is a “proof of concept”. Certainly sounds promising though in managing free radicals in your system. Your body kicks in its own defence mechanism and depletes vitamin C and E to destroy the free radicals. So if this works your body might not need to deplete those minerals as fast…
Assuming you believe their research… you could quite easily make your own pills. I usually buy my bulk herbs at http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkherb/bulkherb.php.
Looking at the “Supplement Facts” at the Protandim website, one could easily locate the ingredients.
