On the two latest rides my GF has gotten a warning on her Edge 530 that says “Left Shifter Battery Critical” (it’s connected to the eTap on her bike). However, when you check the LED on the shifters both are green indicating battery is just fine (6+ months left according to official SRAM documentation).
Anybody has experienced this? The safe thing is of course just to change the battery (it has seen a year of use), but in general I would trust the LED on the shifter itself over what Garmin is saying about a 3rd party component.
Garmin displays what the device sends it. So, eTam told the Garmin to say that the battery was low. It could have been a glitch in the shifter. But, if you seen the message again, I would change batteries.
I had my right shifter battery die on me, and rode most of a ride basically as a single speed. It sucked. (In my case, I loaded my bike in the car with the wheel pressing against the shifter button. After driving a couple hours, it was dead. I got the warning as the ride started and then it quit.)
Not eTap, but I had similar issues with my stages dual PM. Garmin says ‘PM low-battery’, but the stages app shows full charge for both batteries. I haven’t seen it recently, so perhaps there was a fix on the most recent firmware update (?).

Could be the case, doesn’t sound too unlikely - the Garmin hasn’t been updated in a while. I feel the LED lights are less error prone than a Garmin message. But I’ve changed the batteries now before her race tomorrow to be on the safe side - if it says it again soon I think it’s a Garmin bug.
I believe the Garmin will display the status of the element with the lowest battery charge. It could be the rear derailleur, the front derailleur, or any of the shifters.

Remember that the level is measured by the shifter and transitted as part of the Ant+ Shifting spec. Easy way to debug is to pair another Garmin and see if reproducible to see if it’s the sender or receiver of the message that is at fault.

It seems to cycle through them according to the GF. Anyway, a message popped and explicitly said left shifter on the Garmin screen.

That’s a good idea. Would probably require at least a ride or two to check if it pops up again. I guess optimally another unit than Garmin as the bug could plausibly be there across Garmin units as I guess they are probably re-using code across devices.

Could be, but to be honest the code on the Garmin side is pretty simplistic to get the battery level
Resurrecting an old thread. Both my eTap and Garmin 540 have the latest firmwear. Getting a critical low battery warning for the left shifter. When I click the left shifter it’s green. Have been a little cooler outside, upper 30’s to low 40’s during the ride. Will see if it does it again today. The shifter batteries are a few years old so may change them. Did replace the chain and disc pads yesterday getting ready for the upcoming season.
