ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ from the outside looking in PICS

So many bikes, so little time… :frowning:

Michellie Jones’ chariot before her unfortunate crash. I saw her just before I was heading home. Her arm was in a sling under her jacket. I told her that I was looking for her to repeat and asked what happened. Was it a hairy turn or what? She said that she hit a bump and went over the bars. I was looking for her and Mcglone to battle it out on the run as this has been her race to win or lose for some time. I told her that I hoped nothing was broken but she was concerned about her ribs. The whole time that we spoke (albeit brief) she had a very gracious smile even though she was obviously pained. Kind of a regal presence. Hope she’s ok.

This dude from one of the relay teams was jammin’ on the rollers. Other folks were warming up on trainers. Had to take a pic.

Tubies in the old waterbottle:

I saw a lot of this amongst the pros. Shoes secured into position and ready to go, perfecto.

Pwetty.

The minimilist approach. Shoes, hat, bike…

On to the swim. I have never raced the escape but this is my 2nd year working it and conditions seemed near the record setting conditions of last year, except the swim. Reports were that the currents were stronger this year. I’m so gald I moved to the Bay. Can’t get this back home.

Waldo 1st out as expected:

http://img140.echo.cx/img140/2364/picture0362cr.jpg

Currents seemed strong. Imagine a floating question mark in the water. That’s what the swimmers looked like they formed as they attempted to swim to shore. A lot of strong swimmers out there.

Pros in chase:

Sorry no bike pics. Doesn’t really matter, this race was won on the run. I’ll give you the short. Waldo held them off to T2 and took off on the run with a short gap. My money was on Hunter Kemper b4 the race if he was close on the run. Kemper overtook him. Don’t know what happened to Lessing.

This dude is not just a strong triathlete but a true runner especially on short course. Really fast and effortless.

Didn’t know who she was b4 today, but she is buff as hell. She was haulin’. As a matter of fact there were more than the usual buff triathletes in comparison to the slender swimmer built folk that I usually see.

1st Lady Susan Williams

And you know who was chasing her. She’s retiring but she’s still built like a brickhouse. Maybe she will change her mind no?

The funniest pic that I didn’t get. The dude in full jail-break uni (white/black stripes) with ball & chain and shackled at the wrist near the waist. He wasn’t using his arms at all and was hauling. I was laughing to hard to snap the pic.

Talked to Bill Bell the day before. I asked him why he was going “short”? He said he’s starting to age a bit and his body is letting him know. Then he quipped that he may do IM Florida later this year. We both got a laugh out that. I told him that I wanted to do the race next year. He replied there’s nothing to it, just get in there go for it. He’s 83 and still beat nearly 1/2 the field out of the water. DAAAAAANNNNNNNGGG.

The most inspiring and touching thing I saw: The 12 year old girl that completed the race, and podiumed in her age group. Yes she did the whole thing by herself!!! She was handed the mic and asked how she felt. She began to talk about how everyone was cheering her on saying “you’re doing good”, “keep it going”, … b4 she could complete her thank you’s to all the nice people that said nice things, she became overcome with a bit of emotion and everyone cheered for her in support and I thought that was sweet (yes I’m secure in my masculinity enough to say it). But that was what the day was about. Cheering people on that were having fun and digging deep to escape. Anyway it was a beautiful day in the Bay. I’m off to the pool now so that the 13 year old doesn’t kick my butt to bad next year.

Hey, great pics fuego, thanks!!

But you think Kemper is not a real triathlete, only a runner? I agree that he is strongest on the run, but I doubt you can get to be #1 in the world without serious talent in all areas of triathlon.

Great race report and pics… Thanks!

Fantastic write up and pics ! Really helps us people acrooss the planet to take in the atmosphere of the race. Thanks

Umm, I’ll quote myself for you. “This dude is not just a strong triathlete but a true runner especially on short course. Really fast and effortless.”

Maybe I should have said effortless runner. Not taking away from anyone else but every ITU clip that I have seen of his running when added to what I saw in person today showed me that he can flat out go with minimal effort. That accompanied with a solid swim/bike separated him from the field today. That’s all. Just sharing. Hope you enjoy. Thx.

Ohh, man, sorry! I totally read that wrong!! I didn’t ready the just, so I saw “not a strong triathlete”. My bad.

And how about these moments… a dude with apparently amputated legs mid-thigh came out of the water about mid-pack, hopped up onto shore… a dude with only one arm finished the race around top 30 or so (not sure if he was relay, only saw him in T2 and then finish).

.

Absolutely. Always make you appreciate and add perspective. I think he was from CAF and definitely haulin’. He started his leg at the swim finish. I couldn’t his relay swimmer though. I also remember a few legally/fully blind swimmers from last year. Amazing.

Thanks for all the pictures and info. I wanted to know what happened to Jones when I saw that DNF during the bike. Bummer for the crash. Hope she recovers soon and nothing too serious.

The pictures were great. Thanks again.

Thanks for the pics. I watched that race about a decade ago and fell in love with it. However, I am pussy enough to admit the swim freaks me out a bit (eary looking water) eventhough I am a sub 20 minute 1500m swimmer.

Eric…nice pics!!

I have a few pics to post when I get a chance. Too many cocktails this afternoon/evening to deal with it tonight.

I have to say, the ST folks I met this weekend were all terrific, especially Scott, Rich and Eddie, all of whom I got to spend a little time with (Calgary Brent too). I also met TriIllini and a couple of others today (sorry that it was a bit crazed this AM at the boat). A totally great weekend!!

clm

A lonnngg but fun weekend. I needed a break and that hit the spot. I assume you went to the party. Post them when you can. I’ll catch the ST folks next time.

Amazing to see Potts with the fastest overall run. His overall talent is just astounding. World class swim, now world class run, how long before his bike is unstoppable too? (not that it’s “bad” now…) Makes you wonder how many other amazing athletes are hidden behind a desk in a cubicle, where Potts was three or so years ago…

But what happened with the swim? I got “repositioned” and still can’t get used to the concept that you can take a boat ride to a new, seemingly closer spot and not get a penalty. Did this happen to a lot of people? I heard the currents were unusually strong. Otherwise quite a fun race. I got pretty tired on the run and for a while there was hoping to get “repositioned” again. It was nice meeting you Cathy. I felt too self conscious to thank you for all your advice.

Pat

Pat,

It was great to meet you too!!

I hear the tide changed during the swim so people either had a great swim or a not great swim. If you missed doing the “L” and didn’t angle towards shore early, you got swept out. It was amazing to be on the boat and watch way too many people begin heading straight out towards the bridge. There were people spread out for a good quarter mile.

clm

That swim was really tough yesterday. I came in East of the St. Francis and got caught in a eddy or something over there. Took me a good 10 minutes to finish the last 300 yards and I ended up walking along the rocks with 50 other people. Otherwise great day and a very well run race. The run course is really incredible.

Thanks for volunteering Cathy. Tri California does a good job with that event and the spectators were great I felt like a MOP rockstar coming out of the water and at the finish…

I felt like a MOP rockstar coming out of the water and at the finish… <<

Dude, you ARE a rockstar!!!

Trillini,

I was near the shore and I saw a boatload of folks get dropped in the water. They might have been lifeguards though, couldn’t tell and I lost them once swimmers were finishing. Did you wear a ChiTriClub jersey on the run? It wasn’t super hot out but I suspect the run was a sapping one especially after the sand ladder. Way to gut it out. Many seemed to be battling dehydration as evidenced by the salty faces & shorts coming out of T2. Perhaps the swim drained folks more than usual and not enough drink on the bike. I talk to folks that have done the race for many years and they said the current was pushing them back severely.

Clm, out to the bridge, OMG. You are doing a good job of keeping the puss’ from doing the race (present puss included - heehee). Was it a pukefest b4 the boat shipped out? The bay looked like glass last year. Never seen it that way. If I get to do this race I hope the water is like that vs. white-caps.

Sorry I missed you guys but I had a beautiful day spectating. I got the morning off from family duty (no one wanted to come along).

I saw one ST’er, on the run heading out, sporting the Peaceful Tribe Singlet (he was doing pretty well from my memory since I spotted him and he spotted me right where the trail leaves Crissy Field and heads up to the tunnel). He saw my long sleeve black T and said hi but he was past before I could flash the thumbs up.

I watched the whole swim from the seawall at the yacht club and as soon as I saw all the swimmers heading out the Gate I thought, “Uh oh, someone didn’t listen and tried to bee-line the swim.” A couple of friends racing who know that swim well said the current was about normal and if you did the L you were in mid 30ish. So, chalk it up to inexperience or bad navigation or both maybe.

I was giving run splits to the pros as they came back onto Crissy Field for the drag race to the finish. At that point, Barb was only 40 secs. down on Susan. And Andy was down more than a minute on Carter (super pics Eric!).

Anyway, had to leave after the pros passsed me because I had to do my last long run before starting to taper for CdA and then had to be back from that to host a BBQ for friends at my house.

My right knee is shot after an hour so of running no more til race day. Looks like a long walk in CdA.

Cheers!
