I am in the process of purchasing a new tri bike and a new/first wheel set. This will be a MAJOR purchase for me and I am leaning towards purchasing a set of Enve 6.7s with the bike, but am also considering getting a set of Flos and using the extra cash to putting in double paned windows to my crappy condo. Are the Enves as good as I read and can be comfortably used as the only set of wheels on my tri bike? Really, if the Enves can be used as my training and race wheels - I’m sold. But if I should really only race on them, I’d rather sacrifice some performance for cost savings. So, would I feel better saving the 2 grand and putting the money into my house or is this the wheel set that ends all wheel sets? Any help with my first world problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, Enves can be used as a training wheelset.
Plaster your windows with Wheelbuilder wheelcovers.
Get the flos and the double pane windows. There is no such thing as a wheel set that ends all wheel sets. Wheel sets are like bikes, there is always n+1. How do I know? I have 9 bikes, 15 wheelsets and so much more sh*t for my cycling habit… The return is always diminishing as you move up the price scale…this is true of bikes, watches, etc. Get your necessities squared away…your home takes priority over your wheel set especially if this is your first wheelset. Flos are a solid wheelset. The quality is great. No doubt, enve has awesome stuff…I own a bunch of their stuff but if I had to debate between repaning my windows or getting a wheelset, it is a no brainer. Take care of your household first and then the biking stuff.
Get the flos and the windows. You’ll save quite a bit of $ in heating and cooling expenses. Also consider buying a Nest thermostat and programming it properly.
I have FC 808s and Enves on two different bikes and I say 1000% get the Flos if you’re in a situation where there are more important things to buy (i.e. windows in your condo!). I’d say Flos are 95-100% as good as Enve/Zipp, though the bling factor is much greater with the latter.
+1. I have ENVE’s (8.9) and I am lucky for that: they are really amazing wheels. But if you’re deciding between them and windows, choose the windows. Plus the windows will give you daily, long-term comfort and save you money. Flo’s are beautiful wheels too (I ride 30’s).
I agree with this totally. Recently went from zipps to a cheaper wheelset and am not dissappointed at all. Paid some bills and still have race wheels. Feel much better about life.
But the enves add 25 watts to your virtual ftp. Mainly because all the guys with less expensive know they can’t keep up.
I’ll pile on: I love Enve wheels as well and had a Flo disc. If money that tight or even asking that questions, windows for sure. Hell, they should even SAVE you money in heating/cooling. There is a big diff between training wheels and a set of Flos (in performance that is). The jump up to a set of Enves, that last 5% or so, is only worth it if you don’t even know the cost …
sell your condo and purchase a quiver of enve wheel sets for every condition.
Get the Flo’s and new windows. If at some point you decide to sell your condo new windows will help with resale value. As others have commented, savings on heating bills or cooling (A/C) bills will eventually pay for itself for the windows.
Getting Enve’s will just make you poorer in a sense that you have old crappy windows and higher heating bills. They definitely look nice but unless you need an extra few seconds advantage in a Time Trial being the difference between winning and not, you don’t need it.
You could also get the ENVE’s and just turn your heat down by a degree or two… Most people keep the heat in they place too high anyway.

I will say my ENVE wheels survived a pretty mean bump this weekend that blew both tires. Wheels escaped without a nick.
Myth #1: Replacement windows help you save money
All you need to dispel the No. 1 myth about replacing original wood-framed windows in older homes is a little math.
When properly installed, modern replacement windows in an average home with 24 to 30 windows can save you about $50 a month on heating or cooling bills. However, at $500 to $1,000 per replacement window, you could easily spend $12,000 to replace all your windows. In an average home that’s heated or cooled six months out of the year, that comes to about $300 in annual savings.
At that rate, it could take you 40 years to recoup your investment in the windows, far longer than the average homeowner stays in one house, which is between about five to seven years. And in some cases, you’ll never recoup your investment, no matter how long you stay in your home. In an extreme case detailed in a 2007 report by Keith Haberern, a licensed architect and engineer and the chairman of the Collingswood Historic District Commission in New Jersey, the payback time for replacing a single-pane storm window with a low-e insulated glass window was calculated at 222 years.
An additional concern is that modern vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass and composite windows only last about 20 years, with a third of them failing within 10 years. The fact is, it’s virtually impossible to recoup the amount of money spent on replacing old wood windows with new windows before the new windows need to be replaced themselves.
So much good info but you looked over a few key points.
1: You cannot determine the average savings without knowing the local rates per kWh
2: Many utilities will offer incentives to residents for improving the efficiency of their homes (including, but not limited to WINDOWS!)
3: FKDUPJ was right - sell the condo and buy wheels /thread

I’m guessing that, after nearly eight years, the OP has made his purchase(s). A spam account chose to resurrect this old thread.
Hahaha oops. I saw the spam post but didn’t check the original post.
