Enve 5.6, Roval Rapide CLX, HED Vanquish - Which would you choose and why?

Bike is a P5 Disc, these would be training, racing pretty much used all the time wheels (with the option for a Disc for racing).

I’m 5’10’ 140lbs and do get blown around a bit in high crosswinds and I’m not comfortable on deeper wheels. Not looking to go tubeless, so the lack of that on the Specialized doesn’t bother me. Which would you choose and why, or are all of these so close it doesn’t really matter?

These are all great wheels, so you can’t go wrong.

If you said rim brake, I would’ve said SES because with their carbon hubs they’re very light, and the brake track is fantastic.

But for disc, I’d try Roval. They’re lighter, and wider than the other two. Also has fewer spokes ion the front, which is better to my eye. But do find some recent reviews on all options. Roval has had some QC problems on-and-off.

HED is always a solid choice, so they’d be on my short list too.

These would all be great. Can you get a better deal on one of them, or have a branding/look preference? Follow your heart.

Reynolds 58/62X Disc Brake wheelset.

almost Identical weight and height here, I love vision metron 55’s. They’re not the lightest but climb like they’re way lighter than they say, and feel/look fast without a windtunnel of my own. Handle very well in crosswinds as well, rode them for a race around an exposed motor circuit in gusts of up to 40-45 mph if my memory serves me correctly, and although turning into the wind I could feel it pushing me, it was a uniform feeling of the wind coming into me, rather than twitchiness in each gust, like I had with my previous far shallower roval c38s. Hopefully this helps!

I would add reynolds into the group and then buy the cheapest. I researched all of these same wheels until i was blue in the face. Differences in speed are nominal, if any, and opinions on subjective handling etc are all over the map. They are all really good. If I were you, I would follow up with jimatbeyond.

Add DTSwiss to your mix. Amazing finish and really, really good in the winds.

Oh wow, I bought some of these CLX wheels a couple weeks ago and didn’t even realize they aren’t listed as tubeless. Put GP5000 TL on them and they seem to work fine. Hmm, guess I should consider making a change.

Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend this wheel, besides it not apparently being tubeless, which is ridiculous in 2021, the front is just absurdly wide. Even 28s don’t seem like a great match for the rim, almost like it wants 32s.

I have a set of HED Vanquish. I have the RC6, which is a lower tier rim. I think it has different hubs and maybe different carbon layup and weighs a little less. But identical shape and aerodynamics.

The difference was about $1k between the Pro Vanquish or any of the others you mentioned. For me it was a no brainer to save the $1k on something else knowing I’d get the same performance as any of the others. So far they’ve been great - zero complaints.

I’ve got the Vanquish 4s on my road/crit bike and my wife has the CLX’s on hers. Both are rock solid and easy to set up. Just from playing with both, I suspect the Vanquish are a bit more durable, but that is just a guess. The other side of that coin is that the CLXs are built on DT swiss hubs, so getting replacement parts will be easier. Both are great wheels.

I think that’s the point. Cannondale went the same route with their Knot wheels, having the rim noticeably wider than the tire. I’d stick to 28s

I have some CLX wheels. I knew they were not tubeless and I was ok with that. I never rode tubeless on road bikes anyway. A friend who does ended up taking a ride home when he had a puncture one day. I thought, a new tube and he would have been on the road again. Mountain bike I always run tubeless, but there are lots of differences I think from road to mountain bike. I thought the wide rim was a technology thing. I have had Zipps in the past, but after riding some Royal CL40’s daily on my Roubaix, I decided to stick with Roval’s for now.

Yes, I guess it is their discovery that the wheel slightly wider than the tire may be more aero, but I feel uncomfortable with it. I worry hitting a corner hard might hit the wheel. Maybe that’s a ridiculous concern.

ON the CLX which is more aero, 25 or 28? There doesn’t seem to be more info out there on the aero. SuperDave was quoted they were optimized for the turbo cotton 26, but not sure how that translates to something like a Continental 5000?

You want a section width of ~28mm and the Continental would be more aerodynamic than a turbo cotton. A 26c RapidAir would be as well.

Only here to say holy thread resurrection, and HOLY SMOKES SUPERDAVE IS BACK!
