We are getting ready to fly down to Disney for the Goofy Challenge and were planning on only having carry on luggage. I was planning on taking my energy gels of choice but then got to thinking what TSA would do if I had a bunch of them stuffed in my carry on bag. I would hate to have to throw all the gels/Cliff blocks/e caps etc in the trash before even getting on the plane. Any thoughts on TSA’s position on this or how to handle this?
You just need to put the gels into your ZipLoc baggies of liquids - no worries.
Thanks, I just didn’t know if there was a limit to the number of items less than 3oz. It appears that the only limit is what I can stuff in the quart bag.
A quart of energy gels - now that is a disgusting thought!!
I’m jealous. My wife and I had to back out of that race (with no refund) due to financial reasons. Anyway, a funny related story to this…I was coming back from Eagleman two years ago and had a tube of Chamois Butt’r in my carry-on. The TSA guy gave me a funny look and said he had to confiscate it.
I was wondering the same thing as I’m packing for Disney and while the wife/kids have a ton of clothes my luggage consists of Clif Bars, gels, endurox and protein powder in ziplock baggies. My wife said it looked like I was smuggling a kilo of blow and that I won’t get through the security check. I’m thinking any dog that gets near my shoes will die and I’ll be safe.
Good luck with the race.
My wife and I are doing the Disney Half Marathon, we live in the Palm Beach area so we don’t have to fly. Last June I flew with my bike to Tahoe and had no issue with Gels in baggies.
We are driving up next Friday morning, have fun and enjoy.
I haven’t ever had any problem with checked luggage. When I travel with the bike, I just put everything I need for race day in the bike case: racesuit, wetsuit, bike shoes, run shoes, nutrition stuff etc. That way if the bike case gets there, I have everything. If it doesn’t make, then I am totally screwed. I had some friends that haven’t put everything in their bike case and then their other checked bag didn’t make it resulting in more un-necessary race day stress.

Jay,
Too bad you had to bail on Disney. I’m leaving crappy PA for the Sunshine state with my wife and our two girls Wednesday to go to the park and then do the kids’ runs Friday before I do the marathon Sunday.
I know, I know. I keep getting the damn race email updates and I cringe every time. I was signed up for the Goofy Challenge and she for the half. With plane tix, park tix for us and our kids, hotel, rental car, food, etc., it was just going to be a bit much considering I have two big travel races in '09 already on the schedule. We already have Annual Passports for Disneyland here in SoCal and go every 3 weeks or so. Oh well!
So, to make up for it, I signed up for a local 50K trail race in late Feb. to subject myself to even more suffering than the Goofy Challenge would have been…at least I think.
