Never have, never will. Coffee or a Coke (a-Cola) are the only energy drinks I’ve ever had.
My kids drink them, I wouldn’t say in excess, maybe one a day. But they won’t listen to reason that shit is bad for them. Marketing wins out over parental guidance.
Eight a day???!!!
8 per day of anything’s probably not a good idea. And he’s quoted as saying he “didn’t know”.
At some point, some self awareness and reading of labels is a good thing.
I’ll drink a Celsius once in awhile. I like the taste. Looking at the label, the lift is from caffeine (200mg), and it says not to drink more than 2 a day.
yeah on reading the whole thing it is a scare headline, 8 a day is not even close to normal
looking at the cans makes me jumpy, probably a good thing my substance tolerance is so low
I have not had a coke, pepsi, etc. in over 40 years. Talk about “bad shit” heavily marketed.
In my salad days, someone gave me a vodka & Red Bull during a night out.
It tasted the way walking onto a car dealership feels - a slimy, cloying sweetness that just barely doesn’t cover up a predatory malignancy underneath.
I was mildly concerned my heart was going to explode about 10 minutes after finishing it.
After that I decided energy drinks weren’t for me, whether boozed up or not.
When I need to travel long distances, I carry small bottles of energy drink that is similar to Stacker. They do a great job of taking the edge off if I am feeling sleepy. Unless I am really tired, I probably don’t take more than two. If I am really tired, I might take three over 15 hours of driving. But those trips with two and three a day are maybe 10 days a year at most.
About ten years ago I took three in one day in fairly quick succession and my heart was racing pretty fast. I quit doing that.
I have a root beer or a Vernors Ginger Ale on rare occasions… Maybe 3/yr is what I would call a lot.
I had a Red Bull 1x, maybe 20y ago - if they’ve been around that long. I sorta just went “Meh” and never bothered to do it again. The idea of an energy drink other than good black coffee is something that just doesn’t occur to me.
I very much agree soda (or pop depending where you’re from) are not much better than energy drinks. While I partake, it’s rare, a few times a year.
Now coffee, simply black, two cups each morning, is my go-to.
I haven’t had one in probably over 15 years. Back when Red Bull was pretty much the only option, it was my go to when doing long rides. Hit one around 3-4 hours in, to get in 5 or 6 hours. Fueled by that and oatmeal cream pies.
I switched from coffee to Red Bull about five years ago. I have ONE sugar-free Red Bull each morning. 10 calories, and 80 mg caffeine (which is equal to or less than one cup of coffee). It always cracks me up when people ask, “OMG Red Bull? You must be hopped up all day!” Um, no.
I had my first energy drink last year. I was walking back from the gondola to my hotel after a day of skiing and some monster rep was giving away cans of monster zero. It was 4pm, I was absolutely bagged after skiing all day in stormy weather, and wanted a little pick me up otherwise I’d probably just fall asleep at the hotel and not have the energy to go out to dinner etc.
I had around half the can on my way home and tossed it. It was fine, tasted a bit too sweet but not bad.
But then I couldn’t fall sleep until 4am.
The sweetness of red bull is intolerable for me. Tastes like cough syrup.
“Red Bull gives you wings” destination Heaven?
There were promotional vehicles dispensing free RB in DC back when they first hit the market. I found the mid afternoon jolt to be impressive so I was hooked on it for about a year afterward while still playing the triathlete game. caffeine does make the world turn. I would even curtail caffiene consumption as part of a training taper for big races so that the defizzed coke taken late in the race would have a bigger jolt. Never did the caffeine pills though.
Flat coke was a godsend on long training days.
But too much caffeine can really mess with your body. For me, overdoing it really wrecked havoc on my stomach. I also developed insomnia.
For day to day sustained energy, there really is no substitute for proper sleep and hydration. When those two things are consistently on point, a coffee or caffeine hit is nice but not needed.
This is spectacular
I use the individual Celsius packets in my gym bottle, 200mg caffeine but I don’t feel particularly “energised/buzzed” from drinking them (although I mix it with twice the recommended amount of water so it’s not as concentrated, so maybe that’s why - I find the recommended concentration is way too sweet).
When I do long drives I’ll drink Red Bull, number depending on time of day and length of drive. I once drank 3 driving my daughter back to college in GA with the bulk of the drive in the overnight hours. Clearly remember when we stopped at a gas station in northern GA feeling like the ground was vibrating.. I may possibly have overdone it that time.
At IM Wales I threw a Monster (Valentino Rossi edition) in my special needs bag on the bike leg.. I guess the yellow can looked similar to a UK cider brand because I heard one volunteer comment to another that they couldn’t believe I was slamming a cider in the middle of the race.
My 9 year old is has a thing for wanting a RedBull. He knows they aren’t good for you - but marketing is strong (and I think he’s genuinely curious to know what magic they impart).
