I’m a skinny fat ectomorph. The internet is full of advice on how ectos should train to gain muscle mass and look great at the beach. But does body type have any significance when deciding how to train for triathlons (or endurance sports in general)?
Since body types is such a big deal when putting together a plan for strength training, then I presume the same should also apply when training for endurance sports. So should ectos train differently than others to improve endurance performance? I haven’t found anything on the internet about this, so any input is appreciated.
My guess is that ectos should do somewhat more interval training and no quite so much long slow distance training.
However, from the out-set, you have an advantage, in weight to strength/fitness.
As another poster noted, look at world-class endurance athletes in all endurance sports, for the most part, with the few odd exceptions they are ectomorphs.
I can assure you that the examples you sited( Brownlee Gomez et al) are ectomorphs - but at the upper end of the scale description.
The concept of 3 somatotypes (proposed by Sheldon) has been trashed and now in the science landfill. Get a body comp evaluation and go from there re: weight loss or gain. Next, watch the finish of a triathlon race and notice the wide differences in body build.
Hey man, do not be concerned with your body type. Look at Macca and Michael Raelert ( two polar opposites ). Be concerned with your power to weight ratio.
