Endura optimzer vs perpetuem

I used perpetuem in '08 training for Ironman Wisconsin but I wasn’t a big fan. Has anyone tried Endura Optimer as fueling on long rides or runs?

I have used regular endura with their carbo-plex (medical grade carbo-pro) for several years with great success. Recovery wise I go with the Pro-gain chocolate flavor drink mix. I don’t get gastro-intestinal upset at all when I use the Metagenics products. They are a little hard to find and can be costly though.

What didn’t you like about perpetuem? I’m using it in preparation for Boise 70.3 and still feel like the jury is still kinda out for me.

Don’t get me wrong- it wasn’t that bad but you had to make it really pastey for long rides and when that got warm- awful. I’ve been dealing with Chronic Sinus infections for 3 years and now Candida. I’m seeing a nutritionist, among 6 other docs., and she’s put me on a elimination diet (no gluten, no dairy, no soy, no sugar, no alcohol, etc.). She suggested that I try the Endura products, knowing that the Optimizer still has whey protein in it. And she noticed that Endura has more electrolyte and other items in it then the other replenishing drinks. I’m going to try it and see. I’ll keep you posted if you’re interested.

I just looked up the ingredients and compared ProGain to Optimizer. The difference is that optimizer has branch chain amino acids, which will help reduce the usual protien blah feeling I tend to get from higher protien drinks. The Optimizer has more protein than the perpetuem so it may or may not give you more gas depending on how well your system processses it. The protein in Optimizer is Whey whereas the protien in Perpetuem is Soy. Metagenics says the whey isolate is not an issue for lactose intolerant folks though.

I’ll order a tub of optimizer today and see how it goes in training this week and let you know. The chocolate Flavor is yummy by the way.
