Finally listening to my Coaches and taking 2 whole weeks off. Been overtrained for quite a while and injured for the past 2 years in some form.
For this first week, I have done no exercise at all. (Well, other than walking uphill at Yellow Lake writing club members name in chalk in Penticton last Sunday)
Some have suggested doing a bit of Yoga, which I have never done, or some light weights. Curious as to what people here do
Drink beer.
I never drink, so that would be different I guess.
canoeing, kayaking, hiking…anything that gets you into the woods and lakes.
golfing, if you’re so inclined.
cheers!

Personally, I think that 2 weeks off of structured training is the idea more so than 2 weeks off. Spend the next week doing what you enjoy MTB, trail run, swim. For me it’s hard to get back into the mind set of structured training after 2 weeks of laziness.
I’m jealous. I won’t get to my end of the year off weeks until the end of October. My plan is to do nothing (except maybe a swim just to keep my shoulders from setting up).
The beer drinking recommendation is a good one. For me, I like to have a beer or four every night during my off weeks. The end result is that my wife get’s so nervous (and pissed off) about my drinking behavior that she insists I get back to training. In this way, I rarely (if ever) catch hell for spending too much time on tri’s. It’s a win-win situation. I enjoy the brews while I can, and then I get full support for spending 10-20 hours per week swimming/biking/running.

Hope she doesn’t read ST and is on to your game

So you do structured training 50 weeks of the year? Likely much more than the pros, who might take a couple weeks off and have a month or two of unstructured training.

Just came off of my own 2 week rest period. The first week was voluntary as it was after my last A-race of the season and I wanted a bit of time to recover. Slept in, worked a bit more, and ate and drank well. The second week was forced as my daughter was born 6 weeks early. We were stuck in Phoenix without any of my workout stuff, and it was a semi-stressful time so working out wouldn’t have happened anyway. Either way though, getting back into it that first week blows!
If you are planning ahead of time, I highly recommend copying my first week.

And you have coaches?

Not the coaches fault, all mine
Following IMC, I’m spending some time rolling out the tight spots and improving my shoulders range of motion which I find gets restricted from swimming and riding the bike a lot in aero position.
Where did I say that’s all I took per year?
I’m right in the middle of my first planned week off from training. It is awesome.
I’m working on getting fat.
Funny thing is, this is a mid season rest…lol. Not an end of the season. I still have two big races coming up. I’m actually going to ride tomorrow but no structure. Just for fun.
Up to this point, I’m just doing a whole lot of nothing. Reminds me of my life before I started this nonsense. I feel awake at work…lol…that’s different. I don’t have a problem walking up stairs and feeling like I’m going to die. It definitely is a weird feeling to not be fatigued all the time.
To be honest though, this was more of a mental break and now I’m pretty anxious to get going again…so it must have worked.

Drink rum?
