Elon Musk Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize (72% clickbaitish)

I found a rumor online that Musk got a Nobel Peace Prize nomination and it’s true, but it doesn’t matter a whole lot. The nominees are counted in the hundreds each year and all you need to do to get nominated is obtain support of a single member of any national parliament, for instance. (This was the case of Musk’s nomination - enough knobheads sit in parliaments to put a name like this forward, obviously).

However, this got me thinking about the power that Slowtwitch wields. Surely, surely one of us knows someone who meets the criteria of a “qualified nominator” (an MP, a university professor in a specific field) and would be able to nominate, say, Jan Frodeno or Chrissie Wellington or Andrew Messick?

Wouldn’t that be something that the press picks up? What if the nomination goes to a Norwegian? It’s a Norwegian committee after all. Don’t give me all that “unbiased” BS . I’ve met Gustav in person and done an interview with him and in my opinion he would be much better suited for the prize than some of the former winners!

Well damn

I learned something today

All Nobel Prizes save Peace are Swedish

I thought you were going to recommend a member of the lavender room.

Strange that a Swedish guy picked the Norwegians to chose

In 1901 Norway and Sweden were one country - the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway. Since 1394, Norway has been independent for only about 120 years.

It was a rather strange union. The countries still kept many things separate. Scandinavia seems to have been perpetually shifting alliances etc. for sure

Actually not one country. The union was a “personal union” i.e. the two kingdoms had the same monarchs (five of them during the period, 1814-1905), but still being separate kingdoms. From Wikipedia (and this is correct info): “The two states kept separate constitutions, laws, legislatures, administrations, state churches, armed forces, and currencies; the kings mostly resided in Stockholm, where foreign diplomatic representations were located.” In the end though Norway managed to get full independence (with their own king) in 1905, something they had wished for since the begining.
