Electrolytes & Carbs for Endurance Races

I’m preparing for some events this summer and I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for supplements that I should take. I’ve currently been taking Elete’s Tablytes before and after I run and adding Elete’s Citrilyte to my water bottle. I’ve had good luck with it so far. I don’t cramp anymore and I’ve definitely noticed an energy boost. Does anyone have any recommendations for a carbohydrate that I can add to this. I have the Original Elete with no Flavor and the Citrilyte version with Citric Acid so it doesn’t really matter to me if it is flavored. I’m looking for something without a ton of sugar that won’t grow a science project (mold) in my hydration pak. I’ve liked Elete because it doesn’t have sugar and something similar would be great!

Thanks gang!

Have you tried infinit? http://www.infinitnutrition.us/ You can talk to them and they literally make you a custom blend to fit your style, goals, etc. Great Stuff.

you will need some carbs, and you will need some salt. Doesn’t really matter much what brand, as long as it doesn’t upset YOUR stomach.

So, start with cheap, easily available solutions, and if it works, use em. If gatorade powder from the grocery store works, bam, your done. That is pretty easy and cheap.

Or you can try maltodextrin in bulk and add the electrolyte tab of your choice, or carry water and a sweet potato or bananas.

It’s really easy and cheap to mix bulk maltodextrin with powder gatorade. I’ve never used electrolytes and never had an issue, even in a 100 mile ultra.

I used to drink gatorade but I would cramp up and it would make me sick to my stomach on warm days. That’s why I switched to elete. It’s easily the best electrolyte I’ve ever taken. My biggest concern now is carbs during an event.

I used to use Hammer Endurolytes, I have now switched over to Skratch Labs. For calories I go with whatever I’m craving. The best advice is to experiment and find what works best for you. I shoot for about 300 calories an hours on longer rides.

How about EFS Liquid Shot? You can mix about 800 cals plus water in a bottle.

If your drinking Gatorade aren’t you taking in electrolytes?

Very little. I’m more so referring to popping actual pills. But I’ve never actually done a race with the malto/gatorade combo. I have been experimenting with it over the last few months however.

That’s interesting. I typically take in 2 tabs an hour plus gels. In some 100’s i will take25-30 gels and still cramp if I get behind.

Well, electrolytes have little to do with cramps. And even less to do with the total amount of electrolytes and cramps. From my understanding it is the electrolyte concentration that really matters. Training outside of your comfort zone is the most likely cause of cramps. And frankly, most people will be outside of their comfort zone during a 100. No amounts of electrolytes are going to help with that.

I actually know for a fact that electrolytes have everything to do with not getting cramps. Most crap on the market has only sodium and potassium. I get both of those from my french fries and bananas. What I like about elete is that it has magnesium too! There is more magnesium found in the muscles than anywhere else in the body and when magnesium is low… we get cramps! I used to cramp up all the time before I started taking elete Electrolytes. It’s really the best stuff. I was told that it has 50% of the sodium that sports drinks have, same amount of potassium, and lots of magnesium that I’m sure is what makes the difference. It’s not expensive either so as far as I’m concerned, I’ve found my electrolyte solution for life and now I’m just looking for carbs that I can take on the go. I like elete because it’s sugarless and pretty much flavorless (like a lemon slice in my water) and is so easy to use.

He’s not looking for advice. He’s trying to sell his electrolyte drink.

heh, yeah

I know for a FACT, at this point, that he is a shill.

Funny. just because I found something that works :stuck_out_tongue: Everyone keeps posting advice about electrolytes. Really, I’m set. I’m still just looking for a good source of carbs. If one other person can run a marathon without cramping up and actually enjoy running again then great!

@jackmott

What is a “shill”

So you just joined yesterday and every post is to hawk elete. If you’re selling a product come clean…

I joined yesterday. yes. Looking for a good carbohydrate product that I can use while in an event. The topic of electrolytes came up. I already have an electrolyte product that I use. I expressed that. I’m still looking for a good carbohydrate product. I’ve been recommended Infinit but that’s about it. Everything is else all sugar that I’ve tried before.

You may want to revisit your initial proposition that “carbohydrate” and “sugar” are different things.

It looks like Infinit is the way to go then. I just checked out their website and the custom blend generator is pretty neat. Has anyone else used it before and liked it? I figure Elete and Infinit should be a good combo. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.
