Eisenhower must be spinning in his grave

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”

  • President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 11/8/54

huh?

Huh? That’s all?

What it means is that General of the Army Dwight David Eisenhower, Chief of Staff, United States Army, called your president and people that voted for him stupid 50 years in advance.
The only thing he was wrong about was the number of stupid ones.

I assume you wrote “your President” because you are either not a US citizen or don’t understand he is the President whether you voted for him or not.

**Huh? That’s all? **

Because one paragraph copied and pasted and taken out of context is a troll. I want to know what the poster is looking for in the way of a debate. If you know anything at all about Eisenhour, other than your lame attempts at putting in my face he was a soldier, you will find there are a lot more similarities to he and President Bush than differences.

I guess mclamb is suggesting someone is trying to do those things. Maybe he should pick up a newspaper once in a while.

well, let’s see:

if bush moved for nearly full privatization of ss, which in my opinion is what he is pushing for, that would be abolishing ss as we know it and there is no way to spin it otherwise.

as for labor laws, an example would be delay pushing to maintain exemptions for labor laws for u.s. territories such as the marianas islands so companies can have sweatshops that produce “made in the usa” goods.

texas oil millionaires–check.

splinter group? i think so. i don’t think current gop leadership represents main stream republican or america’s social or economic views. some of the polling numbers on the big issues of the moment back that up. bankruptcy reform provides further evidence of this.

there won’t be a push to end farm subsidies, so ike missed the boat on that one.

but basically, yeah, i think a lot of those things are coming to pass in a big way and i read a lot. oh, and which paper should i read given that the msm is supposedly liberal?

You really need to lay off the Kool aid. It seems to corrode brains.

Laying out a variety of ideas to restructure SS is destroying it. Maintaining status quo on obscure labor laws is repealing labor laws. Bipartisan bankruptcy reform backs up something to do with the majority party not being mainstream. Blah, blah, blah.

Maybe a newspaper is too much. Perhaps you should just start with the guy’s speeches. Most of the major speeches are really outstanding, even if they do steal from JFK quite a bit.

Wow…someone trying to fix well known problems on the path to failure is suddenly labeled as someone who wants to wreck and destroy something.

I salute the guy for standing up and proposing solutions to the problem. It’s better than sitting there, folding your arms and saying it’s not “my” problem…

please don’t mention kool-aid and then refer me to bush’s speeches as an authoritative source on the subject matter. too much irony there…

yes, “reform” of ss that completely changes the face and purpose of ss is pretty much destroying it. bush doesn’t want to simply tweak the system. he wants to re-make it completely. i think you are naive if you think he would be willing to settle for a “reform” that doesn’t have privatization at its core.

more on his anti-labor stance: http://www.laborresearch.org/story.php?id=279

Yes Brian. I don’t get Art’s post either. I can’t believe he is saying whenever you try and change something existing you are trying to destroy it. What the heck are you trying to say Art? Maybe you should lay off the Tang…

I guess I should have turned the sarcasm switch on. I thought it was obvious, but I guess not.
