Edco Monobloc Shifting

After lurking for years I’m finally posting for the first time on ST forums. Be gentle…

I have an Edco Monobloc cassette I purchased in order to run a zipp 900 disc that has a 10 speed free-hub that can’t be upgraded. I realize there are other ways to do this, but the Monobloc seemed like the perfect solution with the 10-11 locking nut.

The cassette fits on the wheel perfectly and sits on the bike with plenty of clearance. The bike is Di2 so tuning it up in the stand is easy. however, the moment I get out on the road and put any tension on it the shifting goes to absolute hell. Skips, clangs, or won’t shift at all. It’s essentially unusable.

I know it’s the cassette because I moved it between 3 different wheel sets with the same result (some 10 speed, some 11 speed).

Chain is a brand new, waxed Dura Ace 11spd chainDrive Train is Ultegra 6800 di2Other cassettes of the same ratio work just fineI’ve tried the Monobloc on multiple wheel sets with the same result.

Most reviewers say the monobloc is great and this is it’s exact purpose. I’m at a bit of a loss for anything else I can do to get it working.

Any advice from the ST community would be great.

Have you checked your limit screws? Seems like running a cassette like that may require letting the rear derailleur to travel more inward.

Yeah I checked all that. The cassette isn’t shaped any differently than another cassette. The issue also happens in the middle of the cassette so I know it’s not a high/low limit.

Aaand…actually Edco just called me and said it may be an issue with the “toothing” of the cassette and are sending me a new one. I’ll report back to see if that resolved it

I’ve been using one for a while and have had similar experience.

Luckily, my race wheels are 11 speed, so this is only an issue for my training wheels (which cannot be upgraded). Considering that the Edco cassettes are nearly $200 more than an Ultegra cassette, I’m just going to get a new training wheel when it comes time to replace the Edco cassette. For me it would pay for itself pretty quickly.

For you it might not pay for itself because 1) you’re probably not going through cassettes on your race wheels as quickly and 2) a new disc is a lot more expensive than a new training wheel.

You mean you’ve never got it to shift right?

In my case it’s basically not usable. Or is yours really bad and you just put up with it?

Strange, my girlfriend rides one for over a year. Shifts as smoothbas it can get.

From talking to them I got the impression that they may have had some issues with older units. They are sending me a new one so I guess I’ll know for sure soon.

The one she runs is about a year old. It is on a hed jet wheel

Well, I saw this thread after I’d ordered an Edco cassette to use with my 10 speed Zipp 808 so I could use it with my new 11 speed bike. Thought, uh oh, maybe I’ll be lucky. I wasn’t. Terrible shifting!

I really wanted this to work, it’s a pricey cassette that’s impressively machined and very light. I could get it to shift passably on the trainer but once under load it was a complete fail.

So I’ll call on Monday about returning the cassette and in the meantime I’ve used the DSW trick of taking out a cog and locking out the last click with the L screw, and that works fine. I think I’ll just do that permanently, with the Edco it looked like the 11 tooth cog was awfully close to the dropout and since I have a cover on this wheel I can’t really use the lowest gear anyway without it rubbing on the cover. Just a slight inconvenience to adjust the L screw when I swap wheels.

What a waste of time!

Nope, the Edco is just a POS, at least the production run which we received. The Shimano chain on the bike on which I just tried to use an Edco has no more than a few hundred miles on it, just measured it and no ‘stretch’ at all. My 105 11 speed cassette also has no more than a few hundred miles on it and shifts fine. The Edco tooth shape is much simpler than Shimano, with less variation and minimal ramping that appears to be very crude.

Nope. Chain is brand new

Mine will be here on Tuesday. I’ll let you know how it goes

My new Monobloc arrived today and it shifts perfectly fine.

Looks like they’ve changed them up in the last 6 months and they work better.

Did you buy direct from Edco or another vendor? Thought I’d return it to the vendor but sounds like you dealt directly with Edco.

Mine was a little more complicated but also shows that Edco is willing to work with anyone.

Over a year ago I purchased it from Trisports. But unfortunately due to a run in with a car I wasn’t even able to try it until last week. Well past Tri-sports return policy I contacted edco support directly and it sounds like they are aware of the issue. I was only on the phone with the guy for a few minutes before he agreed to do an exchange. I just had to provide a receipt.

Honestly they were really good about it and he said that they’ve changed how they made them in the past 6 months due to similar issues.

Did you put a 1mm spacer behind it before you assembled it? From your description, it sounds as if the cassette is moving under load.

For an 11spd hub yes, for 10spd no. It’s only required for the 11spd.

The cassette was bad and was exchanged

Sorry for the thread revival but I’m curious about how this turned out. Did the updated Edco cassette perform comparably to Shimano/SRAM in shift quality?

Yeah, the new one worked great. I eventually got a new set of wheels and then sold the cassette for near what I paid for it.
