Ecology and YOU, what does that mean?

I am entering a film festival with ecological solutions as the theme. What do we, as triathletes, do to foster a clean environment (other than ride our bikes a lot)? Can we, as a group, make a statement? And if not, what are some individual, local answers to the group and global circumstance?

I was just gonna do the car vs bike thing, or pollution in our waters, but I thought the LR might have some ‘alternative’ ideas. Anybody? The piece is only 90 seconds, so please cut to the chase (scene). Gracias.

Triathletes do NOT ride their bikes to foster a cleaner environment. They ride to train and during races. You are thinking of a bicycle commuter. If anything, I would say tri cyclists add pollution by travelling to various events. I’m not saying triathletes aren’t pro environment; just that triathalon, in and of itself, has little to nothing to do with bettering the environment.

That said, I would approach it by saying that us tri folk try to lead a healthy and clean lifestyle; we try to be intelligent in the activities we choose. This definately flows into other aspects of our live’s (e.g., awareness and love of the environment in which we conduct our tri activities). I hope this makes sense.

Since I live in Hawaii…I buy local (and organic) food. Here it’s very easy as there are farmers markets around that make buying local easy, I read an article about a community that tries to get people to do that, it means at different times of the year, you get different produce (not really teh case here).

I also have a small garden, mostly tomatoes, peppers and spices. When my friends try my tomatoes, so many of them consider starting a garden themselves (again, here in hawaii this is relatively easy to do)

Triathletes are grevious offenders of the environment. As a group, they just do too much breathing. Breathing, without conservation, equals CO2 production equals the end of the world. Their main goal is to produce as much CO2 as possible to cover a given distance. That is, they are trying to maximize their greenhouse gas production.

There is too much breathing going on out there.

Maybe I should have sent this just to Matt and Casey. Thanks Art.

Yes, it does make sense. Maybe it’s just me but when I ride my bike, for taining. commuting or fun, I look at cars as the polar extreme. That is the point I am trying to establish (visually).

Not to mention all those spent Hammergel packets they carelessly toss on the side of the road.

So, then, I need to do a 90 second piece on one bycle rider who only buys produce from a source within her riding range. How would THAT change thngs? You would get good in a hurry at IM when that source lives 56 miles away. I love HI.

I pee in many large bodies of water.

So being stronger, healthier, fitter and more confident hepls the environment? I want to agree, please tell me why.

That’s why my brother once told me he would never do a triathlon. I tried to explain about PPBs, but he was already waving me off.
