Early morning or evening workout junkies:

For you morning workout maniacs: what time do you wake up to work out in the morning and what’s the latest you get to bed at night?
For you evening workout maniacs: how long after your workout are you able to go to bed? Do you struggle with falling asleep?

not quite a junkie… but as far as my workouts go…
I workout in the morning if im also working out in the afternoon. generally I’ll get up between 5 and 6, and get to work by 8. try to hit 7hrs of sleep, but not always possible.
Working out in the afternoon is usually right after work- say 5:30-whenever. If i eat when i get home, and cant workout till 7ish, then yea… i usually ahve trouble sleeping after- normally a non-issue, unless im getting up the next morning to get back at it… kindof annoying- whcih is why i try to get it done as soon as i get home
but thats just me
and right now im only at 8-10hrs/week of training say… 3 doubles, 3 singles, and a day off.

Up at 4 a.m. and on the bike by 4:30 a.m. The latest I get to bed is 10:30 p.m. Normally I’m in bed by 10 p.m. Disclaimer - I take a 1/2 nap every day at lunch.

For a while last summer i was up at 4.45am and rode for a little over and hour. I stopped because I was riding much slower then i did in the late afternoon. I went to bed at 10 when i was doing that.
On the other side I sometimes run after 9.30pm (for an hour) and yes i have trouble falling asleep it was usually after 12 by the time i did.

Usually up at 4:45am, out the door at 5:00am and back by 6:15am - 6:30. I try to get to bed by 10pm, but sometimes stretches to 11pm.

up at 4am, usually out the door by 4:30; get to pool about 5 til 5am. Usually done by 6 or 6:30 am and on the way to work.

now that the weather is warmer, I have been doing a run before the swim so I try to get out the door by 4:15.

I get to bed anywhere between 8:30 - 10pm. This schedule works great for me because I have always been a morning person

I wish I could live off of 6 hrs of sleep. I have to have a min. of 7 hrs, and even at that I struggle getting my ass up to work out. I feel great after my morning workout but fatigue really sets in while driving to work. I try to get to bed by 10 so I can wake up by 5 to get a 1 hr workout in. I thought about working out in the evenings but with little kids, that’s pretty much impossible unless I work out @ 9pm. And if I did that, I wondered how long it would take to finally wind down from the workout to be able to go to bed. Looks like I’m going to have to keep doing the morning workout thing and just try to get to bed even earlier. Maybe I have some sort of sleep apnea? Hell, I don’t know….I would just like to wake up feeling good, feel great after my workout and continue that feeling throughout the morning. Am I just dreaming?

For a long time when I was training for my marathon last year I tried the morning workouts but I just couldn’t do it. No matter how much sleep I was getting I just could not crawl out of bed that early.

I try to be in bed by 9:30 (for 8 hours of sleep) and I’ve found that I need 2-3 hours between the end of my workouts and when I go to sleep. So now I usually work out right when I get home from work - @ 4:30pm. Workout until 6-6:30. Seems to work for me.

Man this is my biggest struggle. My preference is to workout mid morning or early afternoon but that isn’t possible with work. My evening workouts are usually better quality than early morning but with a hectic and stressful workday I’m often too tired to workout in the evenings. Lately I’ve been skipping the evening workouts from exhaustion. Then I go to be at 9 or 10 planning to wake at 5 am. That almost nev er happens though. I’m not a morning person but somehow I have to make myself get those workouts in. Too much can happen during the day to screw up thew evening workouts. It is a shame we have to actually work. It really gets in the way.

I’m not a morning junky, but it’s a necessity. Alarm goes off around 4am and I leave the house around 4:45.
I try to go to bed at 8pm, but it’s usually more like 8:30pm.

During the summer months when there’s after work daylight I also do some evening workouts and when I’ve been getting up at 4am, there’s no problem going to sleep! run, stop sweating, shower, sleep right away.

There’s also a nooner (not the wonderful kind–a workout).

I do almost all my workouts in the morning. Normally wake up around 4:30 - 5:00 AM. I only swim in the afternoon, but I struggle to get motivated for a PM workout after a long day at work when I’m not able to do it in the morning. Besides, I live in south TX and its in the 100’s here most of the year during the day so temps are a little cooler for AM workouts.

are you a morning person or do you have to force yourself out of bed? What time do you go to bed?

I’m still waiting to get used to waking up early to workout but I’m beginning to doubt that will ever happen.

I get up at 4-430 and head to the pool by 6. Then after work I usually train for a couple hours before dinner at 6. No sleep issues and usually out by 9pm.

4:45 wake up, typically in bed by 10:30pm
.

I don’t think you ever get completely used to it and I still hit the snooze button on occasion. It does get a little easier after a while. The trick is to jump out of bed as soon as you hear the alarm. The longer you lay there the harder it is to get out of bed. I start to freak out if I’m still awake past 10:00PM. I leave everything ready the night before and that helps to get up.

I tried for two years (one for a new job, one for the training) and never could do it. I was going to bed early, getting a good solid 7-8 hours of sleep but getting up that early sucked and my workouts reflected it. I honestly think some people just have a better ability to adapt.

I usually get up around 5:30 and am on the road by 6 - 6:30. I’m fortunate enough to live with other cyclists that will get up and bang on my bedroom door to get me out of bed though. Knowing that 2 or 3 people are waiting for you to get up and ride has been a great training motivator for me.

3AM for 2-2.5 hrs on the bike. 4AM for a 5:30Am pool open at the Y. Wknds I get to ‘sleep in’ until either 6AM or Sundays till whenever.

During the weeks usually starting to wrap it all up at 9PM and asleep by 10.

cheers

Holy Crap! That’s insane!
Shouldn’t your post have been written in pink?!!!

I end every day with a very high intensity elliptical session (45 mins/7.8 miles), regardless of the other workouts I’ve done in the morning/afternoon. I have no problems falliing asleep and I am very prone to insomnia, having worked nights for almost a decade, which permanently messed up my circadian rhythm. If anything I find that evening workout helps me get to sleep. I usually hit the elliptical at around 7:00PM and my usual bedtime is between 10:45PM-11:30PM - I’m usually falling-down tired by then.
