Looking at the wording of the new “early benefits” program offered by ironman for those who signed within the first 90 days of registration opening, it seems that you can only transfer to a race within the same calendar year and I wonder how that would work for Q4 races as options would be very limited/inexistent … has anyone tried to transfer from a 2022 to a 2023 race?
I’m looking at a couple October-November races next year but would only sign up in advance if I can transfer to 2024
you’re correct transfer only to 2023 races OR defer to 2024 same race.

This is key…
Thanks for confirming. Hopefully IM will eventually adjust the terms to offer the transfer within 12 months so that all races get the same “option value”; the free deferral is definitely key but in the case of IM California for example, Sacramento only signed a 3 year contract with 2023 being the last year and there’s no guarantee that they will renew for 2024, especially after the first 2 editions being “challenging” (bomb cyclone/cancellation in 2021 and crazy winds/mixed feedback in 2022)

let’s see the registration of ironman in this 2023, but for my it is not a real benefit to enter money in a race early… only because If I cannot race it, i can join a not full race this year (paying much more money) or joining the same race next year (this is cost free).
In fact, I see only the second point as a good thing: because you can transfer it free cost.
And for Ironman it doesn’t solve a problem: when you don’t know what to do, early benefit is shit. Because you can register one race, but if you want to change, you have to pay the difference. So, better you wait to register in the second race. And as said, if you cannot race the fist, you may not find a second race to select.
And I could provide a second problem: after early 90 days expires… to register one race is even less attractive, so people would wait even longer to fill a race.

I wouldn’t hold your breath. They’ve had the transfer program for 10 years now and it’s always been into a race that’s within the same calendar year and not sold out. Which is a conundrum for late season races.
Probably wishful thinking indeed given their trackrecord
