Eagleman 70.3

This race’s women’s start list is pure fire. Mens not bad either.

Almost disappointed im racing. I suspect they will all be done before I get a chance to see them on the run. Got lucky in 2022 and saw Andy Potts run past to finish just as I got onto the run, not sure I’ll get to see any of these podium favorite this year.

and more, 34 in all. Kleiser and LCB ONLY non-North Americans!!
For an IM Pro Series race.
LCB to get (validate) her Marbella ticket and then travel on to T100 Vancouver a week later.
F6 was Lawrence, but she got a wildcard for T100 SF and subsequently one for T100 Vancouver: the weekends either side.

Sanders has pulled out. One of Long’s motives to race this has vanished.
Mercifully we have the women’s race with two IM World Champions (Sodaro and LCB) racing and Jewett as sweeper.

I am also not sure that Trevor Foley (ranked #3 on TriRating for the race) is racing as in his last video, released today, he mentioned that he is in week 1 of his 7 week build to IMPlacid and then 70.3 Boulder. No mention of Eagleman at all.

This is a 5:45am start. Is that the new normal for these races? That is crazy early! I’m racing this year and we start at 5:55am.

Is Kleiser going to race this a week after T100 SF and a week before T100 Vancouver?
LCB racing 6 days before T100 Vancouver (!) She desperately needs to validate for Marbella.

Yes, normal for Eagleman, the AG race started at 6 last year. The Pro race is a bit earlier bc they are giving more time between the Men’s, Women’s and AG races here. Gulf Coast is even earlier at 5:40ish usually.

Sunrise is at something like 5:38 so it will be plenty bright.

I don’t understand the point of this. Surely it helps roads closures a little bit, but there’s no need to start at 6:00AM instead of 7:00 for a 70.3.

Is anyone seriously thinking “This one starts early so I can get back to work by noon”? There’s this weird self righteousness about waking up stupidly early. Optimal athletic performance doesn’t happen until 3-4h after waking, so it’s 1:45AM-2:45AM wake up call for this one. It’s just dumb

This race typically is close to 100% humidity with no shade and over 85 on the run. The earlier it starts the less impact the weather has on the BOP. It’s also nice as a Sunday race to be able to travel home after the race same day.

Hard disagree. Well, on the first point, drive home is fair.

It looks like rain Sunday morning so looking at a day with no rain, time and temperature, dew point is the same through the day.

6 - 66
8 - 70
10- 74
12 - 78
2 - 79
4 - 79
6 - 77
The run course will be populated between 8 and 2. Even if you bumped the start by 2h to 8:00AM the temps would be 4degF more for FOP and the practically the same for BOP.

I’ve never heard of this.

The high temps for this race the past 4 years have been
85
91
81
82

The high for the day has fallen typically around 230. With a race start at 6am am 8 hour finisher will be finished just as the temp is hitting it’s max (assuming they start 1/2 hr after gun). If you push that back 2 hours they would spend the majority of the run at max heat.

I’m hoping this year the forecast holds where it’s going to stay relatively cool through noon. If so it will be a fast day for a lot of people.

Yea I’m not a fan of the start time. I did the race 2 years ago and it was at the normal 6:50am-ish start. Would be interested to know the reasoning behind the start time being so early. Maybe a combination of a bunch of things (roads, weather, currents, etc.) but 5:55am seems a bit excessive haha.

Some of the fastest WPro runners head-to-head toeing the line:
Jewett, Kleiser, Sodaro

I don’t disagree that the hottest part of the day is early afternoon. But there’s not a ton of difference in temps between 12 and 6 on most days. Around 4-6 degrees on average. Color me unconvinced that BOP athletes racing in 5deg hotter temps is reason enough to start everyone an hour early.

Aren’t ironman events about being tough and overcoming adversity? The whole point of Kona is that the conditions are abysmal.

I’ve actually never looked this up, it’s just common wisdom that I’ve heard for most coaches and top athletes. I’d love to be proved wrong, for my own sleep sanity

Sooo BOP running in 5 degree lower temp makes them less strong but you needing your beauty sleep makes you a tough guy? Not really the strongest of arguments.
