There are a few of us here with a DHS.
I have kept mine in, and it has now been approx 7 years.
My surgeon said I would want it out after about 12-18 months. But I qualified for worlds and did not want the downtime.
FYI I was roughly 39 I think when I had my DHS done. Not had too many issues with it to be honest, no reason to want it out at present.
In terms of recovery after having it out, I was told that I would have quite limited weight bearing for 6 weeks given the size of the screw and deficit it would leave. So I think I was looking at 12 weeks or so before being able to commence full training, which is difficult.
If you are open to it, feel free to share a bit more of your history, what led you to needing the DHS, how old you are, any other injuries from this incident etc…
Hello. Thanks for your reply. I’m 38 years old. I had DHS because I got hit and run while riding bike…the reason why I’m considering the removal is possible complications when I get old. Plus it’s a foreign object. Of course there’s no guarantee that I will feel better after the removal. I’ve asked some people who had it for many years. They had complications like arthritis and some ended up with replacement. That’s why I want to do the opposite approach…I don’t know maybe because of the DHS or the fracture itself is the cause of complications. And we cant control what’s going to happen in the future. Thanks

I am a Specialist myself, just the other side of the drapes. So have seen this operation a lot.
You won’t get arthritis from a DHS, there is no joint involvement.
First rule of medicine is to do no harm.
Any medical procedure has complications etc, personally I would not remove it in a few planned fashion unless you have a complication. If it’s all stable and no issues I would just leave it be. Don’t put yourself through all of that!
Thanks for your advice…how was your recovery during your first 6 months? I’m on my 6 months now and I’m still having some pain and discomfort in my hip joint. Kinda like arthritis. Discomfort and weakness also in my knee area…where is your fracture? Neck of femur? Was it displaced? Mine is intertrochanteric and displaced. Thanks

My recovery was pretty good.
Mine was intertrochanteric but not displaced.
I was on a spin bike within two weeks and back at work within three. But had significant pain for close to a year from the joint area. If you can imagine the way these devices work is that it grabs the proximal fracture end and then compresses things back together, you get a fair bit of pain from that. Bone injuries hurt. I honestly doubt whether the pain you have now is from the metalware as such. The knee stuff likely unrelated to the metalware and may be part of the injury mechanism from when you were hit.
I am having mine removed on August 9. I am getting the hip replaced due to AVN. I have had the screw in since 2003. Looking for better results than you have. Would hope to be pain free log before 6 months. My doctor said recovery takes 4 to 6 weeks. Back to walking with days, so hope not to lose the major muscle loss from the original fracture. Anyone have this kind of operation that could talk about the recovery and getting back to biking I would be grateful. Doctor said my running days are over (i’m 65) and he’ll be seeing me in 5-10 years to replace the other side.
Ooh. It’s been almost 20 years since you had the DHS. Where is your fracture located? And what do you think the cause of your AVN? Is it because of the screw or the fracture itself?..and how come your doctor said that your other hip is going to be replaced in the future? Thanks
Displaced fracture of femur just below the neck. AVN is caused by loss of blood flow. I had the operation same day as crash, but is was a very bad break. Other side of hip is showing degeneration, arthritis, bursitis. I just hope the new hip relieves the pain. Doctor said my running days are over, but I really enjoy biking, so it will be great to get back to riding.
I hope your pain goes out after the operation. Mine is intertrochanteric fracture. I don’t understand why some people with hip fracture the other side of their hip gets affected also. Do you still feel the pain now on the other side? Is it bone on bone? Thanks
