Dura Ace 10 Cassette Question ? Techies!

Anyone know if on a Dura Ace 10 Cassette once the locknut is torqued down should there be any side play in the cogs. Am installing the DA10 Cassette on a new Zipp 808 wheel and it appears there is still a bit of side play once the nut is torqued down. In their instruction flyer that came with the DA10 cassette there is a spacer that fits behind the first Cog (biggest) but is says and I quote "When installing the CS-7800 to the 9-speed freehub, install a spacer in the position shown in the illustration. I didn’t install the spacer as to my knowledge this is not a 9-speed freehub, however it looks to me that should I go back and install the spacer it would take up the remaining freeplay once the nut was torqued again.

Any insight into this troubling technical dilemma would be most appreciated as I would really like to take the 808’s out this weekend for a spin.

You’ll probably need the spacer, but I’m not positive. Call Zipp directly and they’ll help you out.

did you use a spacer for 9sp hubs?

You definitely need the spacer, I used it for all of my wheels including my Zipp 606’s.

That’s what I kinda figured as it appeared none of my other wheelsets had any sideplay in the cassette when I checked but I have not had them apart so couldn’t say for sure. I’ll put it in tonight and install the wheel and take it for a test drive and check the shifting.

There should not be any play in the rear cassette. I had this same thing happen to me when I had a new cassette installed on my 404’s. The first shop (LBS) I took it to installed the cassette and had a hard time getting the locknut to engage. Apparently, they claim, this is common for Zipps. While at a race I was having my rear derailer adjusted and the tech noticed the play in the cassette. He wound up filing a spacer to fit.

I just put my 10 speed cassette on a zipp disk and had side play. Interestingly, I went back and looked at my velemax hub and realized that there was already a spacer, behind the cassette, so I didn’t notice it when I pulled the cassette. Popped that baby on and it did the trick.

I knew there were people out there a lot smarter than me if I just asked the question.

You guys rock !
