Dubbed or Subtitles Foreign Movies and Shows

Is it just me, or is watching a show that was dubbed into English or has English subtitles unwatchable? I hate when Nextflix suggest a show that looks interesting, and then I see it was dubbed. Their mouth not matching up to the words is too distracting.

no problem with subtitles but hate dubbing –

it’s never perfect enough not to be distracting
.

I don’t mind subtitles but not interested in something that’s been dubbed.

Subtitles is fine. (In fact some of my favorite shows are subtitled). Don’t recall a dubbed movie or show.

In general prefer subtitles, but the dubbing in Money Heist was tolerable to be able to enjoy a great series.

Subtitles is fine, I don’t watch dubbed media

Like others, subtitles are fine, dubbing is no bueno.

Related note, I saw the movie Fargo in a theater in Denmark. There were Danish subtitles - probably not necessary, given the widespread English language proficiency there. But even with most folks able to follow the English language dialog, I was often the only one laughing because none of the Danes got the humor in the accents and general Upper Midwest-ness of the scenes. Some things just don’t translate well.

You are correct. I just watched T-34 on Amazon Prime. It’s a Russian WWII movie based on a Russian tank commander who is captured and forced to take a team of Russian tankers to train German tank crews. They bust out and go on the run. Very entertaining movie. Dubbed over in English, making the dialogue pretty terrible. I would have preferred subtitles. But, I still enjoyed the movie.

Only dubbed shows I’ve watched are the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo original series of movies in Swedish. It wasn’t terrible but I hate when the words don’t match the mouth.

The subtitled version was fine

if a movie is made in another language, i want to hear it in that language and read subtitles.

It really depends. Generally I don’t like either. Seems the last one i sat completely through was Das Boot.

My problem is most of my TV watching time is while working out (bike trainer or weights) so subtitles don’t work when I cannot stare at the screen the entire time.

I’ve tried watching a few shows on Netflix where they seem to switch back and forth between english and dubbed in english. Currently trying to watch Ragnarok, it’s clearly dubbed but times it seems like they switch over to English.

No to subtitles. I don’t want to have to read a movie.

Re: dubbing, it’s only worth it for comedic value - as in the Chinese martial arts movies that used to air on Saturday afternoons. .

Dubbed is painful to watch. With a few exceptions. For instance, “Slapshot” in English is funny. In French, it’s okay. In Québécois, it’s hilarious.

+1

I watch a lot of subbed media. Everything I watched last weekend was subbed - Parasite is amazing BTW.

I love subtitled movies. I’m not a fan of dubbing.

I highly recommend watch the following in original language with subtitles:

“Das Boot”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
Almost anything by Akira Kurosawa (“Rashomon”, “Ran”, “Seven Samurai”, etc)
“City of God”

For me, dubbed is a non-starter, though I don’t love subtitles. I feel like I’m missing part of the performance because I’m reading the bottom of the screen instead of looking at the actor who is delivering the line. However, short of learning German or whatever, subtitles offer the best compromise and allow me to watch foreign films.

Just chiming in, dubbed is horrible, subtitles are fine.

No to subtitles. I don’t want to have to read a movie.

You can always watch The Irishman and have a movie read to you.

Another no vote on dubbed.
