A buddy and I were kicking arund the idea of a duathlon where it is a 15k bike, 5k run, 15k bike. One minute interval TT starts. He came up with the idea of calling it “The Cyclists Revenge Duathlon”
What do you guys think? Is there a reason you never see a bike-run-bike duathlon?
The idea for a duathlon originally came from the promoter of Cyclefest, which is FLorida’s big 3 day bike race festival and the local TT series. Cyclefest is on the NRC calendar so it brings guys from all over. The promoter was looking for a way to get more exposure for Cyclefest.
A short run makes it doable for guys like me who could probably only muster a 8 or maybe 7 minute mile pace, but can hold 24.5 or better on a 15k TT. Still won’t hold a candle to good du/tri athletes, but would level it out for real life, genetically challenged AGers like myself.
Thats a pretty cool idea. You should pursue it.
if you don’t like running really, how about a 40km TT and no running?
although your idea is cool actually…
Great Idea, but make the middle run much longer.
That’s an interesting idea, but perhaps you’d consider expanding to an F-1 (e.g. 2k run / 15k bike / 2k run / 15k bike / 2k run). They’re very exciting, great training and within the duathlete community very popular. Good luck!
I’d do one. I’d like the run to be longer though because I’ve a better runner.
A big issue with this is the finish. Having a bunch of multi-sporters sprinting for the line is a recipe for disaster. What do you do about the position rules in the last 500m, when some people might be going wheel to wheel the whole way? You also need to have plenty of room beyond the finish line for the cyclists to slow down; you have to make sure that they go far enough past the line for the next people to sprint over the line and have room to slow down. Unless using chip technology, you have to have people taking numbers (not to mention times!).
I’ve only done one multisport race that finished with the bike (the No Run All Fun Biathlon: ~2000yd swim, 14 mile bike!), and it was a blast. Luckily, I only had one other racer near me at the finish, so it wasn’t an issue.
