Duathlon-biggest USA race

Any big races scheduled in US for 2020?
Powerman n america seems to be regressing no info for upcoming events
Wish desert princess would make a comeback
Europe has lots of races and Powerman series but 2 sport seems dead. In fact aquabike events seem to be more popular than run-bike-run
Only sprint events here in san diego, rock the bay had international but 4 loops on a terrible course
Slowman any advice for the big races?

Same thing here in Tx. Nothing but short course du’s. Sort of disappointing. I’ve talked with a few RDs and the consensus seems to be the longer efforts are “too hard” and don’t attract sufficient numbers to warrant holding a long course duathlon. Unfortunate.

There is USAT LC Du Nats (Miami Man) this year. While there are small fields there, there are certainly always some real “go-getter” high end guys that show up. Usually a couple guys that could be pros but are not.

American Zofingen up in the north east. Limited to 250, think it sells out. I really want to do it once I stop making hawai’i 70.3 my A race

Regretfully American Zofingen does not sell out. But it is a solid course that makes you earn your finishing beer. It’s also the lowest registration fee per mile I’ve seen for multisport. It also offers the longest course I know of (long course: 5, 84, 15 miles). Middle distance, F1 format: 5, 27, 5, 27, 5 miles. Short course packs a punch too: 5, 27, 5 mi and bets the most registrants.

Other duathlons in my are are shorter: 5 k runs, maybe 20-ish mi bike.

It’s not a huge race, but the Michigan Titanium offers longer duathlon options. They don’t have a run to start … just staggered bike starts. They have Olympic, half distance and full distance races. Last year they had nearly 100 people in the three races.

Nice to see the availability of longer distance multisport without a swim. But those are ‘cyclorun’ events in my book, not duathlons. The Music City Triathlon (Nashville, TN) is a reasonably large event, but offers a cyclorun and not a duathlon (sprint and Oly distances). The number of participants (me included) is pretty small, so I understand why event organizers don’t have much love for the duathlon/cyclorun. What I don’t understand is the lack of participation. Hanging around in transition, getting things ready, all I hear is concerns over the swim. You know, there is an option…

America’s Tri in Muncie Indiana has a half distance duathlon option. I believe it is a 10k run, 90k bike, 10k run which is the longest run-bike-run option I’ve found in my research. I’m not very familiar with it myself, and it looks like there were 4 participants at the 2018 race.

What about duathlon nationals? They have a draft legal sprint on day 1 and then a standard (olympic distance) and a sprint distance on day 2.

It’s not a long distance but the competition was awesome this year in Greenville. The draft legal event was a blast. I wish there were more draft legal type stuff around the country.

Personally I don’t understand the fascination with ultra/long distance events.
Duathlon is a victim of Ironman marketing which has a trickledown effect even to ultra sprint tris.
People crave recognition and most people know what triathlon is and its perception as the ultimate endurance event so it gets them a bit more street cred with their friends etc…which I understand to a certain point.
Ive been doing duathlon since the 80’s and have done my share of tris as well but my love is with run/bike/run.
I feel that sprint distance is where its at for duathlon here in the US and really on a local level. Since the demise of the Coors/Dannon duathlon series its never been the same.
I personally put on a sprint du series here locally as my little way to give back to the sport I love.

Powerman is fading in the States. I raced PM Az a couple years back and thought it was poorly ran.
Long Course nationals is in a few weeks at the Miamiman festival.
But honestly, other than the nationals events, there aren’t a whole lot of options. We had a 70.3 style distance locally in Colorado a few weeks back. The total du field was about 30 people.
Apple Duathlon in Minnesota usually attracts a good amount of people, but has been declining.

Challenge Daytona in December has a “Half-Iron” distance and a sprint distance duathlon as part of their program. Miami Man was a great event last year and has the half-distance duathlon every year, even when not part of the national championships rotation. There are a few other 70.3 triathlons that have incorporated duathlon options in their programs as well. I think it makes sense, and requires very little additional work on the RD crew to accommodate. There are a lot of people out there who want a solid day of racing but don’t have the time (or inclination in some cases), to add swimming into their training.

I do wish duathlon had a larger crowd. It’s really hard and fun racing, when done right.
