DT Swiss R1700 + PT

Hi,

Just got myself a Powertap, and looking for a training wheelset to build from. So far main option was DT Swiss RR 1.2 (the only one rim with 24 holes rim available on the market) it’s all great, but heavy… I just discovered what the R1700 wheelset they do in fact has a 24 holes on the rear wheel and it is much lighter. Would it be feasible to rebuild that one with PT?
Does anyone know what hub/rim are those? What the rim geometry would be for spokes length calculation.

Thanks!

How did you compare weight? The R1700 rear wheel is 910g (shimano) but without Powertap Hub. And the powertap hub weights more than a “standard” rear hub (more or less 200g depending on the kind of powertap hub). So, if you rebuilt your R1700 wheel with the powertap hub, you better loose 200g.

Myself, I plan to have a wheel built with Powertap SL+ and DT Swiss RR 585 rim (= RR1.2 old pre-2009 name) + 28 aerolite spokes. This wheel weights 1120g which is 190g heavier than your R1700 BUT with a powertap hub…

The thing is, i want to get a set.

My calculations for RR585 + Aerolite in DT Spoke Calculator was:

Rear wheel: 1168g
Front wheel: 787g

total 1955g, plus price to build that here in Switzerland ~800CHF

the R1700
Rear wheel: 910g (+156 for PT =1066g)
Front wheel: 740g

total 1650g (1806g)

this set will cost me about 500CHF + about 100 for changing the hub to PT, and i get a spare hub + set of spokes.

300CHF cheaper and 150g lighter, and less hassles.

I’m not intending to use this set for racing (have Zipp 606) so aerodynamic is not the issus, but for all-round training, with some climbing

DT Swiss RR 1.2 (the only one rim with 24 holes rim available on the market) it’s all great, but heavy.

Kinlin has several models available with 24h, as does Hed (Belgium C2), and Velocity. Check out wheelbuilder, they have a bunch of different packages, and IIRC, they will build your PT hub into a wheel for something like $100 over the cost of the wheel components.

…here in Switzerland…

oh oh… where are you in Switzerland?
I work in Fribourg but live near Vevey.
I am searching for a really professional wheel builder for building my second PT wheel but don’t know a real “pro” ones here (the ones that check the strength of the spokes with a dedicated tool).

I decided to do for RR585, for reasons please see: http://axl.mishchenko.org/2011/02/power-of-wheels-part-1.html
.

… and thats what i’ve got: http://oleksiy.posterous.com/the-power-of-wheels-part-two
