So I have been having some left hip pain for about 4 months when running. The pain began to happen on the back last week. Went to the doctor and had x-rays. The x-rays came back clean (no fracture or Arthritis). Went to physical therapy today and she said that the hip was very tight. She tested flexibility and measurements of both legs. When she started doing some hands on exams, she found some major trigger points and recommended Dry Needling. I told her I just wanted the discomfort gone so I could get back to training. If you have ever hard it you know that is painful however I can already notice an improvement if flexibility.
Anyone else had this treatment? Please provide me your thoughts.
I have had it for trigger points in my calf. I am a huge fan of dry needles, they got me back on the road the very next day as opposed to struggling on and off for weeks waiting for the trigger point to settle down. If you indeed have them in your hips, go for it!!!
My wife is an acupuncturist and recently did dry needling on me for the first time for ITBS and soas tightness. Worked great and I was running again after 2 treatments. Along with foam rolling, stretching, etc. but I believe dry needling had the greatest impact.
I am good friends with a physical therapist and usually go see him the day after races to do some dry needling in my legs to help loosen them up (especially after hilly races). They will be sore for the rest of the day but feel 10x better the next day.
Calf and hamstring issues and had very good luck. I’m usually sore that day and tight and a little sore the next day but I do an easy workout to get things moving. By day two, good to go.
I’ve never had more than 2-3 visits to correct my issues. I’ve used if for calf heart attacks, pulled my hami once and pulled my upper soleous under the gastroc once or twice.
I had a slipped hips which I decided to train through for some reason, anyway… my muscles were completely messed up and imbalanced from it. Dry needling while it didn’t feel good to have done, nor feel good directly afterwards, the difference is unbelievable! I saw major progression in flexibility, and muscle/nerve pain immediately. I highly recommend it.
I have some calf issues after having a knee replacement and have not been able to build quad muscles enough to help and the calf takes over. Dry needling takes the tightness out and let’s me continue to work on strength and get back on the bike.
It is not necessarily the most comfortable thing to have done but the results are well worth it.
I’m a PT and have been dry needling for about 1.5 years. I can say the needling (TDN) has been a huge benefit to my patients. I find it most effective on more athletic types of patients, and most have significant improvement in range of motion/flexibility immediately after treatment. Patients also love homework assignments after the needling which usually includes a hot bath and 1-2 servings of alcohol.
I’ve had great success with dry needling for the relief of back spasms and trigger points in hips/glutes. My back spasms were relieved in one session. I did not find it painful whatsoever, just a bit uncomfortable at times. Highly recommend it.
