So the Trump admin just announced they will be requiring Big Pharma to have the cost of the drug if over $35/mo displayed on their TV ads. My uneducated mind seems to think this isn’t such a bad thing. However, that’s probably because I’m not a fan of Big Pharma. In reality, I don’t think I want all of my commercials to have to talk about their pricing structure. Nothing is stopping me from picking up the phone and either asking my PCP, pharmacy, or insurance company what something costs. Convince me Big Pharma is any different.

I don’t think those people are asking for it though. Almost no one pays the list price. Poor people use Medcaid and other programs. Old people use Medicare. Almost everyone else uses insurance that covers some % of drug cost.
This likely mostly just scares people who don’t understand it’s not what they’re going to have to pay if they need the drug. Particularly old people. It seems a poor campaign tactic to scare old voters you’re hoping will vote for you. It’s not what I’d call pandering.

Link is broken, but I heard a blurb on NPR that said pricing info would be tacked on at the end of the commercial along with all the possible side effects.
Those are both pretty heavily advertised. Do you think that will cause a backlash against the companies.
If anything maybe Big Pharma will stop spending $4 billion dollars a year on advertising.
This goes a little bit against my usual freedom of speech positions, but I honestly feel there is exactly zero upside to advertising prescription drugs to people and the potential that they ask or beg their doc for it so it gets prescribed at 5000 bucks whereas a generic at 50 bucks has just as much efficacy. These ads just encourage less efficiency in medicine.

I guess. Just seems like it would be more of an AOC or Warren move than a Trump move. This increases regulation of business (I’d ask what 10 regulations were removed for this one since they promised to kill 10 for every new one or whatever).

It seems like most of the drugs that people need, not want, aren’t advertised. For example, I don’t see TV advertisements for insulin.
Yep. Most of the maintenance drugs aren’t advertised. And some of these are most ripe for exploitation. When Turing (of Shkrelli the pharma bro fame) jacked the price it wasn’t being advertised. When colchicine was jacked by 50x it wasn’t advertised. I’ve got no love for pharma advertising at all, but that isn’t what is driving drug prices.
And as has been pointed out, who pays list price of drugs? The price is non-informative.
