Dropping like flies

Go to about 8:05 in this race and just watch for a few minutes. Is this normal?!

Not normal but more common in cross country where coaches are screaming at them to kick it in for a better scoring position. That’s what it looks like when you’ve given everything. Have you watched ITU triathlon finishes? Men and women hitting the ground the instant they cross the line…very frequently. Here’s Gomez and Brownlee on the mat after their finish (3:15) into the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm04y-F5UXM They are more composed but the point is that the sprint really sucks it out of you, especially when you are trying to sprint on grass.

Not sure that it is “normal” but certainly not uncommon, particularly in women’s races. Not sure why. Watch the men’s race and see how many guys are going down like that. Not anywhere near the same numbers. Again not sure why.

On a slight tangent, there’s very few things I find more annoying being manhandled by an overzealous volunteers in the finish shoot, when I’m moving along just find.

What possessed you to watch an 8-year-old podunk cross country race?

No, not normal.

I was thinking the same thing! He must be some sort of pervert…

Well it started with not wanting to do work at work because it is Friday.

So I was searching posts for how hard people run during 5ks. Got the usual some can stand at the end, some can’t, some always go hard, some think it is bad, some think you are not racing if you don’t puke afterwards, etc. Then I stumbled upon a post on some forum that someone posted this video - the website of the link also has the guys races too - and he wondered if it was normal. So like most of you - I clicked the link - and thought Id look at what he was talking about.

Thus thought it was kinda interesting and figured most of you have not seen a podunk 7 year old college race - THAT if you look at the mens races includes Jacob Korir - and now I am curious if he has any relation to the Kenyan Wesley Korir that was/is a top marathoner.

Watch xc skiing. Now that is entertainment.

Just did - good God

at least they get to fall on snow and it is cold out - vs a hot muggy grass or pavement fall with running lol

I think it’s based on the expectations of the sport. When I ran XC we were expected to stay standing/walking after finishing (like most Olympic 10k runners do). In contrast, in XC ski races it’s generally acceptable/expected to collapse over the line.
In the early days of triathlon (ex. USTS) almost no pros collapsed at the finish, in ITU today it’s practically mandatory.
