The map from the IMCA website doesn’t give me exact directions for driving it. Is there a detailed map or cue sheet somewhere so I can drive the course when I get up there? I can find most of it from the website map but the out and back doesn’t have mileage or clear road distinctions on it.
I just made a quick GPS route with Garmin City Navigator. I started/ended it on Westminster & Main (left out the little bit on Lakeshore Dr.). If you have a Garmin device, this track will give you the turn-by-turn navigation for the bike leg. You might be able to open it with Google Maps (file extension is .gdb), but I dunno how to do that. If you want a copy, PM me an email address.
This is somewhat tangential to the subject but I’m looking at the elevation profile on MapMyRide and have a really hard time believing that the early part of Richter is steeper than McClean Creek (by at least 2% unless I’m color blind).
first, thanks for the mapmyride and other ideas. The map my ride gives me what I needed, I THINK.
I have always heard that the out and back is mentally the most painful part of the course which is why I wanted to see exactly how it works. From what I see on this link, we stay on 3/3B almost to Keremos, then turn right on Becks/Renfew, and right on Upper Bench for the out and back. There is also a teeny little extra out and back on Daly Dr in the middle of the stint on Upper Bench. Is this correct? For some reason, as bad as I expected the out and back to seem based on all of the stories, the way this lays out on the map makes it seem even worse. Is this all correct? Yuck
that said, who really cares, pedal till they tell you to get off and run, but it’s nice to know and I want to see it.
Richter really isn’t that bad (unless your are from the flatlands). It is long but it is very gradual and I’d almost use the word “gentle” (though that will no doubt draw some fire…). If you want to train for an IMC hill climb, go do some steep repaeats late in your workouts to mimic Yellow Lake…
The steepest climb on the whole course is the McClean Creek Rd. climb. The steepest pitch on there is easily the steepest climb by a long shot on the whole course. It’s very short, and everyone feels good at the point in the ride, but it’s unquestionably the steepest.

Believe me, I know Richter well. I’ve done this race 3x. I just can’t believe that Richter has a higher gradient than McClean anywhere on the entire stair-step climb. Again, this is according to MapMyRide.

Ok. I’m making a big deal out of nothing but I’m bored and I’m tapering…
So why the hell does MapMyRide have it completely wrong???
The first time I did this race I’d heard similar comments on the out and back, but it’s never seemed like a big deal to me. It doesn’t last that long, you get your special needs bag (if you care), and you also get some spectator support for the first time in a while. Plus, with the bike traffic coming/going, you get to see where others are in the race.
As a professional map geek, it’s probably just a function of scale/resolution… That graphic only shows a max grade of 5%, which is really not very steep, but then it looks to be broken down in pretty coarse increments (1-2 miles). So there may well be steeper pitches over shorter distances, but they must get averaged down to only 3-4% over an entire segment.
