And people wonder why I pretty much stick to Zwift.
Yep, this is the reason I don’t ride anymore. Well actually I was more worried of people on their cell phones, but had a few incidents like this too minus the getting hit part. This is close to where I did most of my riding.
That was my go to riding area when I lived there. I am only aware of two of the cyclist’s names that were hit and I know both of them. One of which was one of the people airlifted to the hospital. He posted on Facebook last night so he’s at least alive and coherent. He has some significant injuries to overcome. I co-founded the tri club in that area and both those guys were active members.
That’s a lot of truck (F-250 Super Duty) for a 16 year old beginner driver to handle and manage. My kid is 16 and there’s no chance I’d let him drive something like that… discounting the kid driving like a total moron.

If we put inner city kids in the school to prison pipeline for peddling a little pot at school I think this kid deserves quite a bit more than that. 16 is old enough he should be in prison for a decade for something like this. Intentional assault then almost kills people.
On the bike front…I find it really interesting the colonization of the US with so many folks from Britain then whoa and behold among Euro countries you see roughly the same disgusting attitudes. Reading road.cc you would swear you were reading about a town in Tenn or Ky and not a place in Europe. Britain and the US best buds in the gross “me me mine” drivers versus bikes world.
Yeah, I know one of them too. I am, in the interest of privacy, withholding that unless they decide they want us to cover it.
Sent you a PM.
The driver has not even been arrested…
The driver has not even been arrested…
My educated guess is a) law enforcement is still conducting their investigation (interviews, video review, etc), and b) he’s a minor. Being a minor doesn’t mean he might not be charged it just likely makes the process a bit more cautious.

Very bizarre post, probably the first person in history to link terrible attitudes to cyclists in the US with colonisation.
The types of attitude it appears lots of US cyclists encounter is miles away from anything I’ve ever experienced in the UK. I have never heard a cyclist in the UK decide to give up cycling on the road because of the risks, but this seems a fairly common decision US posters are forced to make.
That said, regardless where you live, once in every X weeks / months / years you come across a lunatic, whether it’s at the shops, in the car or on the bike, obviously ideally not on the bike!
Oh wow I have ridden these same roads and that is crazy. Praying for all the folks affected by this as well as the 16yo as he needs to use this to do a 180 on his life.
Try as an adult. Full strength of the law against them. Want to see a 10 year minimum sentence.
Also, you get this trash attitude from your parents, so they need some type of counseling and being placed in a vulnerable position type training.
ETA- If someone that was airlifted dies he needs a vehicular homicide charge. Life Sentence.
First thought I had was Ethan Couch aka affluenza kid. Hope it doesn’t turn into that mess.
Unfortunately he is 16, so pretty much nothing in the way of deserved justice will be done. Community service at the most, which is a joke.

Admittedly it’s a serious stretch. I give up…it was a random thought.
Terrible. Really pisses me off. I live in Ohio where there are lots of large pick-ups with bullying drivers. I understand your anger about this incident, however should the editor-in-chief of ST be suggesting that cyclists stop riding on the roads? Is that really healthy for the future of triathlon?
what a coward, trying to buzz some cyclists in a 2 ton truck. Doesn’t surprise me reading it’s in Houston though, the morons here have no respect for anyone.
Like others said, make no wonder nobody rides outside anymore.
I’m suggesting that people need to make the risk calculus themselves. And this is yet another example why my list of roads I choose to ride outdoors on is small, and why Zwift is a key training tool.
The riding is very nice where I live (Ruidoso, NM). 99.9% of motorists are very courteous… even the dually diesel truck drivers. I’ve probably been “rolling coal” smoke blasted a dozen times this year, but no one has come close enough to hitting me that it spiked my adrenaline.
In most places bike riding outside isn’t that dangerous. Take reasonable precautions like bright flashing lights front and rear, pick good roads at good times of the day, and don’t be an idiot.
The odds aren’t bad at all… forget the alarming anecdotes, and get on with your life.
Makes me glad 16 year olds can’t drive cars where I live, and getting a license is a proper pain in the backside.
What a stupid tragedy.
How horrible for everybody. I truly hope that the cyclists make a full and speedy recovery and get made whole by the kid driver AND his parents.
I drive a giant truck very similar (99 F250 7.3l diesel) and it is a very hard truck to stop, weighing in at 7,800 pounds without a load. My truck isn’t a toy and isn’t a tool to intimidate anybody or roll coal and I know that if I ever hit anybody smaller than a semi-truck, it will be a very bad day for the victim.
I’ll keep telling everybody I know that they need to give cyclists space and not be dumb asses. Sadly, I know some drivers of trucks who are still jerks. I also know many who are very kind and considerate and they do share the road generously.
Stay safe, stay smart, stay cool.
