Currently, I’m seeking a new job, and I’ve got a good line into one. Did the recruiter screen. I have done the HR phone interview. Now, moving on to a video interview via Skype with the hiring manager next Thursday. It’s at 5am PST and 8am EST. They understand that I’m on a customer job site and my availability is restricted. That being said, does it matter how I should dress?
Wearing a suit coat, shirt, and tie seems over done. Shirt and tie seems kind of silly if I’m not going to wear a coat, and yet, somehow, wearing a dress shirt under a light sweater may still seem inappropriate. Thoughts? Experiences here?
For my current job I wore coat and tie up top and boxers down below. My now current boss wore a button down shirt. I felt over dressed but I still got the job.

Generally speaking, you’re better off overdressing than underdressing, IMHO. I’d at least go with a button down shirt. My preference as an interviewer would be to see a tie as well. To me it shows acknowledgment of wanting to look one’s best and put a good foot forward when asking for a job. YMMV.

My wife conducts these all the time for her recruiting. Treat is as formally as you would in person.
Also, if you are already bitching about the interview time you probably don’t want the job. And that will come across in your attitude on screen.
Look at the company’s web site and glassdoor.com to get an idea of corp culture then dress 1 step above. If casual wear a button down or dress shirt. If business casual wear a sport coat + dress shirt, no tie.
I went through this about 6 months ago myself. I opted for conservative suit and tie. I’m not sure what level of job you are interviewing for, but, I recommend a sports coat / blazer, dress shirt (button down or other collar) and conservative tie at a minimum (Dark coat, plain Blue or White shirt).
I’m assuming your taking this at home so be aware of what is behind you. You don’t want your Taylor Swift poster in the background while your interviewing.
Also whatever you do don’t take it in the bathroom and flush the toilet at the end of the call.

Is Lego allowed? I have the red F1 car and the Tumbler behind me visible by cam.
You could also have a few books relevant to your industry ‘accidentally’ placed in view on the bookshelf behind you. DBA position? Hide your copy of ‘SQL for Dummies’ and put ‘SQL Administration Deep Dive’ on show instead.
Pro tip: use a bluetooth headset such as the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD. Looks and sounds much better than shouting at your laptop.
Wear a suit. I don’t think that anyone has ever not been hired for being over dressed.
Not true anymore. I interviewed at a place and the recruiter specifically told me not to wear a tie. You wear a tie to an interview in the Bay Area and they will send you back to the Midwest.

They Bay area doesn’t count, they all think that they are way cooler than they really are.
