Just qualified for Hawaii next year for the first time. Looking at getting a new bike and wheelset early next year what are everyone’s opinions as to the best rig for the big island especailly. Currently got a P3 was thinkin bout a P3C or Scott Plasma, wheels 404’s, 808’s or XENTIS.
There’s nothing wrong with your P3. I’d just keep riding it. As for wheels, if you’re riding 700c wheels, I’d go with a 404 front and 808 rear if you’ve got lots of money or a Hed Alps front, Deep rear if you want great wheels for a lot less money. I used a Hed Deep rear wheel in 2004 with the mega-winds and didn’t have any problems with control so don’t worry about how deep the rear wheel is.
don’t see any reason to change your frame except for that new is always cooler. I don’t think you’ll see any difference changing frames although some will argue that the carbon is more comfy. Race wheels, just pick something cool and go with it. I’m guessing by the books a pair of Zipp 808s or something super deep like that would be the ticket.
A P3 is a nice ride. Your reasons for switching should only be fit-based. You won’t be any faster on a P3 Carbon unless your current P3 fits you poorly and you need a different size. I got rid of my P3 because of geometry- I have long legs (high saddle and corresponding high-ish handlebars). That head tube was just too short. I am now on a custom Roark titanium aero frame and absolutely love it.
If you just want a new bike to get a new bike, just be sure that it will fit as good or better than your current bike. I would not recommend the Scott Plasma based on what I have read thus far- it has the seat “mast” rather than removable seat post. I imagine it is much harder to transport, which is a consideration for going to Hawaii.
As for wheels, the typical recommendation nowadays is Zipp 606’s. Some pro’s get by on 808’s, but I would honestly be a bit leery of doing an 81mm deep rim on the front for a course that is notorious for winds. I have been out on some pretty windy days on my 404 front wheel and had some scary moments. I’m talking ~20mph constant with 30+mph gusts. Not good.
