Dog Put Down to Join Dead Owner

A dog owner requested in her will that her pet be euthanised and cremated so that they could be buried together.

Man this pushes some buttons. I’m disgusted not so much by the taking of the dog’s life, which happens, but by the breaking of faith between owner and pet. I think. Anyway worthy of discussion.

A great example of how selfish and fucked up humans can be.

Vet should of walked the dog out the back door and handed the “family” bunch bunch of coal ashes.

It raises some interesting questions. The dog doesn’t know it is being euthanized so did it suffer? Probably no. Probably not as much as being stuck in a shelter and missing its owner.

Personally though if I was the executor I would have taken the dog in myself or rehomed it.

Pet owners are weird.

When my dog dies, I want some one to take me behind the shed and put me down so I can be buried with her.

I’ll do it. I don’t have a gun though so it might hurt quite a bit.

My Wife’s aunt had a toy poodle that hated everybody except her. None of her kids wanted the dog. When she died, the dog was put to sleep and buried with her. It was in the casket at the funeral. My wife has a strange family.

Is it better or worse than Karl Lagerfeld leaving all of his millions to a stupid dog?

Just playing devils advocate…

There’s been stories of elderly couples doing ‘assisted’ suicide-suicide or suicide after natural death of partner. Granted the second party makes the choice.

Also many stories of dogs spending every day at their owners grave being miserable (sometimes for years). Are they really having a good time?

I can see cases where it’s probably less traumatic for the dog. I don’t know if this was such a case as I didn’t click the link. Sometimes the remaining entity doesn’t enjoy staying but harder to prove in an animal.

Absolute horseshit. Selfish and disgusting.

Yes, some pets struggle with the loss of an owner, but, not all and not even a majority. Wifie’s sister passed in March. She had a dog about whom I had heard horror stories. He hates everyone. He bites everyone. He attacks dogs. When she dies, he needs to be put down. That was the plan - to put him down. Well, wifie did not like that idea. I told her to bring him home. Below is a picture of this “killer dog.” He is best friends with our other two, has never even barked at anyone. He follows me around constantly. He is a GREAT dog who did not deserve to die for no reason.

Nature vs. nurture.

If it’s that important to someone they should make arrangements with family or friends who would be willing to take the pet if they pass away with the stipulation that when the animal dies at some point in the future the ashes can be placed at their grave site.

Great job by you and your wife. Dogs are awesome. They usually only bite people that deserve it… And lets face it - most of us don’t like people - why should we expect our dogs to.

Fucking dog probably blew it all on cats and rawhide. I don’t have kids and I have been contemplating putting a clause in my will will that whoever volunteers to take care of my dogs when I die gets the bulk of my estate. Only to be revealed after people have volunteered. Kind of my way to find out who my real friends are.

As to the OP, it is an amazingly selfish thing to do. The dog didn’t suffer, but what is the possible positive from killing it?

We don’t know what kinda hell that dog would have gone through if it was left in the care of animal control. Poor thing gets to spend the rest of its days in a cage and a concrete floor? No thank you.

I rescued my Sophie from a rescue that was in front of a pet store. I didn’t go to get a dog but she was so sickly looking I knew if I didn’t take her she was going to die. Her mommy had died 2 months prior and nobody wanted her. Now she’s my Sophie!

She, and I, got lucky that day. She would have died a horrible death

I have zero qualms with the wishes of the owner. It shows true love to me. “ I will never let you go alone and unloved, even in my death.”

I’m just assuming this story isn’t real and this is an analogy on abortion, right?

Did you read the article? People stepped up to either take the dog or place it with a rescue. There is absolutely no evidence that dog was going to be placed with animal control.

That’s making one hell of an assumption - i.e., that no one would love that dog after the owner’s death. My n=1 case showing the fallacy of that position is posted above.

I have the same case as you stated. Well, close enough.

I did not know that people had stepped up to take the dog. Although nice, it still does not change my mind. People drop unwanted pets off at the. Pound daily. One day they are taking it, the next they are dropping it at the pound.

I hate people. They are mean, pathetic and cruel. Who drops a fucking raccohttps://youtu.be/G9WgZBRkuUQon in the middle of the ocean?

Didn’t read all the responses but coming from a daughter who did this for her mother 22 years ago-it is fucked up and has traumatized me on so many levels. Mom made this request for her 10 year old dog and I got elected to do it. The vet knew it was coming and agreed. So yes, I got handed the box of ashes(thank you very much) and I was in the room when the euthanasia happened. I was horrified but as a family, it was decided to be carried out.
It was much more traumatic than losing my mother at the time-very contentious relationship and I thought doing this for my mother would make me feel like a better daughter-NOT SO.
Don’t jump to conclusions folks…death in a family does not always bring out the best.
