Does Great Floridian Close?

Does Great Floridian Close? I am signed up for IM FLA but work schedule may prevent me from doing it. So, I figure this might be a good option.

Not in a few years - but sign up early and let the RD’s know you plan to go.

I have a funny feeling about this one this year. If the gulf becomes a sludge pond, many people may be desperate for an option and take a closer look at it. It is a tougher race also! I would consider doing it (signing up) sooner then later eh.

3 favorite courses of all time:

  1. World’s Toughest
  2. Wilkes Barre
  3. GFT

Bring your legs b/c Sugarloaf is fun, but it’s only the tip of the berg. Constant rollers, lots of wind and believe it or not the heat is still plentiful that late in the year.

No kidding! I did GFT the year the bike was 117miles long… those rollers sucked the life out of me.

92’? That year I remember hitting 116 miles and that last 4 was hard on my mentally since I had under fueled. I should have know better though b/c it was the same course as the previous year, but my 1st trip. We didn’t exactly have ST to scope out issues though!

I did the race last year and the bike was spot on - 112 miles. I’ll never do it again because I live in WI and they had record setting heat and doing an IM in 100 degree weather is absolutely ridiculous. With that said, the race was really well run and if the potential of heat doesn’t concern you I’d sign up for it.

The year I did it was 2002, I think. The bike was a figure eight, with the first loop with all the hills and the second loop pretty flat, but I was really ready to be done after 70 miles or so.
I wanted to cry when my bike computer hit 112 miles, and that water tower in town was waaaaaaay far away still. sniff.
