Does anyone know of an ultra swim event in the US or Canada?

I am looking for a long distance swim event to train for to do next summer. The SOS is something I am very interested in, but that is not exclusively swimming. Any ideas?

There’s an annual swim here, seems pretty fun.

New York City has a Marathon swim around the island of Manhattan.
About 27-28 miles. I don’t know if that is long enough for you.

There are several here in Quebec

How far ?

This one has up to 32km

Here’s a list of US open water swims from the USA swimming website. What distances are you looking for?

9 Km swim across English Bay in Vancouver. I did it years ago and loved it.

Might want to browse:

I’m in the same boat as you, and have picked the US Masters Swimming’s 2-mile Cable National Championship in Lake Placid. Would prefer the 1 mile, but it is out in Portland and LP is a short drive I can do that morning…

Thanks guys, these are great. I particularly like the one in Utah. The swim around Manhattan looks challenging but I live in NY and I am looking for an event I can travel to for a little vacation. Also, I am too familiar of what goes into that water if you know what I mean (:But any swim over 6 miles is what I am looking for.

Thanks again,
Joe

SoCal (LA area) has the catalina channel which is pretty much the daddy for this type of thing in the US. 21 miles and proper open water, not an “event” though.

There’s a new this year event from Manhattan Beach pier to Santa Monica pier. Still an ocean swim but you’re not heading out into the deep blue yonder and it’s a girly 12.6 miles.

Or there’s always gatorman in la jolla which is only 3 miles but reliably pretty rough.

The Memphremagog swim marathon has been a staple in Quebec for decades. Draws an international crowd and some National media coverage. This is only 34 Kms. Hope that’s enough.

Maui Channel swim- Labor Day weekend

10-11 miles from one island to another

Double Rough Water Swim-December
about 4.5 miles. From one end of Waikiki to the other and back

Swim around Key West.

I’ve done Manhattan and wouldn’t be so quick to say no. The scenery and support are simply amazing. Lots of info on their web site. The Boston Light Swim is within driving distance, the water a tad colder, and we had less support…but that was a while back and things seem well organized now. How about the Big Shoulders in Chicago? Catalina and Maui are a hike but each fun in it’s own way. Before I’d swim Key West, I’d ask a couple folks who’d done it. We’d planned it a few years ago but were talked out of it. The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim is 4.4 miles across the bay at Annapolis and a fun day. Chuck Nabit organizes it and does a good job.

Lastly, the Pensacola Bay Swim is 5k and you swim next to a long bridge so not only do you not get lost, you swim absolutely straight. Then spend the afternoon on the beautiful white sand beaches.

Here’s a good one ! Sitka Sound Adventure Swim in the first part of August. Sitka, Alaska. 10 K or 5 K open water ocean swim in Sitka Sound. Non wetsuit or wetsuit divisions. Great place. Beautiful. Good people.

Wife and I did Malta 2 years ago. Best vacation ever.

Not sure how long you’re looking for. Here’s a 4.4 miler in Annapolis:

There’s a 10k swim in Fort Collins, CO that just took place this Sunday (I did the 2.4 version). The altitude may make it tougher than it sounds.

I didn’t see the Kingdom Swim mentioned. 10 miles in lake Memphremagog on the US side. Very well done, excellent race. You could drive from New yOrk I reckon. The Lake and area are beautiful.

I also didn’t see the Tampa Bay Maration. 24 miles straight up Tampa Bay. If a front comes through and you have strong Northerly winds, can be wickedly difficult. If not, then it is smooth sailing. Last I looked it was about 50/50 on how it goes.

Swim Around Key West. 12.5 miles around the island in late june. I did it as a two person team this year-don’t ask how I did.

Can you elaborate on what it was that dissuaded you from doing Key West?
