Does anyone know a SAFE route from UCLA-Hilgard Ave. or Veteran Ave. over to San Vicente?
I’m looking to ride San Vicente Blvd. to the coast but to get from UCLA over to SV both Sunset and Wilshire seem very dangerous. Any ideas other than driving to and then riding? Thanks.
Cant go through the Veteran’s Cemetery anymore because they have the gate locked on Veteran Ave…so the ONLY route that everyone seems to use is…
Start from the corner of Gayley and Veteran and continue straight on Gayley to Sepulveda and make a Left on Sepulveda. Pass the Veterans Memorial and make a right at the set of lights to go under the 405 and into the Veterans Hospital Memorial area where the UCLA baseball field is located. Make a left at the UCLA baseball field and continue through Veterans until it brings you out at the top of San Vicente. I have biked this route over a 100 times I’m sure and you are bound to see more than 1 biker everytime…its everyones shortcut…NO secret anymore.
Great, thank you. Is the Veterans Cemetary open early, like 5:30 am or 6am?
There was a small gate into the cemetary along Veteran somewhere in the vicinity of Weyburn or Strathmore. If the gate isn’t there anymore, go west on Wilshire and turn right on Sepulveda, then left on Constitution and go under the freeway.
Made that route hundreds of times while in grad school at UCLA in 84-85.
Yeah twenty years and guess how many more people and cars in that area
Last time I was up at UCLA, which was a couple of months ago, a cyclist was actually on the sidewalk of Wilshire because that area is way to crazy to bike in.
I saw other cyclists on each side (Brentwood and Westwood) appear as if they had come via a back route which could possible be safer-whic is why I asked the question.
I thought maybe the cemetery but was also wondering about those gates-that Muffin said are now closed.
They closed the cemetary pedestrian gate citing 9/11 terrorism threats several years ago (2001/2002?). There have been rumors, however, that some cyclists were using the cemetary grounds for intervals and that was the real reason. A number of the UCLA-area cyclists started a petition to have the gate reopened, but I guess nothing happened. It was a huge access point for many cyclists/pedestrians coming to UCLA.
In regards to the route through the VA grounds, English Muffin got it right. I make that trip several times each week.
Sepulveda > Constitution > Pershing > Dewey > Eisenhower > Bringham > San Vicente (or any other variation of roads within the VA grounds).
If you ever do the La Grange Sunday Nichols Canyon ride, that is how the ride gets back over the Pete’s Coffee on San Vicente.
Hey! I lived on Nichols Canyon for 2 years. Right up at the top before you turn right up to Mulholland. Across the street from Doc Severinson and Richard Dreyfuss.
