Documentary: Maxed Out

Seeing how much talk there is on the front page of the Lavender Room today regarding home refi, credit scores, etc… I thought I would post how much I believe everyone should watch this movie/documentary.

It explores the situation of predatory lending in America and the common social thinking around lending.

Very sobering, truly interesting movie. if you have Netflix and IE 7.0, you can watch it online. I gave it five stars. I watched it shortly after reading Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. didn’t need one, but am really interested in making the best possible decisions with my money.

Ciao,

I wanna see it. I just read great book called Deluxe that blows huge holes in the fashion industry. For example if a company has a purse that is not selling they will jack up the price. People will see it is more expensive and whip out their Visas to get it. Consumer culture is scary.

The diamond industry is the same deal. Insane costs for a stone that is not that rare after all.

After watching maxed out, I became very frustrated with the strategies the loan companies use. There are multiple testimonial from a Harvard Law professor on the issue, and she couldn’t be more right. I have begun sending back pizza coupons to the CC companies when they send me applications.

My sister buys from Diamond Essence which sells industrial diamonds dirt cheap. A diamond is a diamond except to most consumers minds. Sad.

I saw your post and then started watching “Dave Ramsey” video clips on YouTube.

He’s got some great advice for achieving a “debt free” life and brings up a lot of great stats, info, etc. Some good stuff on the CC companies and their practices …scary.

It’s a 9 part series, each video about 9-10 mins long.

Here’s a review of Total Money Makeover from The Simple Dollar, which was recently voted the #1 personal finance blog (http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2006/12/09/review-the-total-money-makeover/) Sounds like it is good, but might not fit for all people.

TSD is a great blog, if you’re looking into TMM, I’d recommend TSD as well as Get Rich Slowly (http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/). Both offer interesting and practical tips on how to save money, budget, etc.

Would you have a link? I’d love to watch them.

You can watch it on Google Video. It’s worth the time. Maxed Out
