Am I supposed to wear underwear with running shorts that have a liner? Old school running shorts never had a liner. Now the last several pairs of shorts I’ve bought have an elastic liner. I’m wondering what the purpose is - unless I’m just supposed to treat them like bike shorts - and go commando…? What is up with this?
If they have a liner, I go commando.
I specifically look for the ones with a boxer brief style of liner like the brooks sherpa, and I’ll go commando in those. I have one pair with the standard briefs liner, but I wear something under those or my thunder thighs will rub too much.
Depends on the quality of the liner. I generally find they don’t provide enough “support”. So, I usually were boxer briefs underneath.

does that even count as commando?
but no, i don’t wear underpants if they have a liner. and i only wear running shorts with liners.
If people are staring not at your eyes you prob need another layer. I’ve got a couple pairs like that
I do usually but probably shouldn’t. In fact I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t wear underwear. My favourite shorts are some inov8s which have a kind of Lycra lining. I never wear underwear with these.
I always wear compression shorts under running shorts, because they feel more supportive, but a good quality liner is made to not wear anything. I would say it is somewhat personal preference. If you do not like running in just the liner, then either put on some underwear/compression shorts, or take the liner out, and then wear what you want under.
If theres any liner of any kind or shape, no undies.
Do you wear two pairs of underwear regularly? If not, you’re probably fine barebacking it in the liner. In nearly 30 years of running races, I’ve never worn underwear under my shorts (which have always had liners). I’ve worn compression shorts underneath on occasion for warmth or injury (providing extra support coming back from a hamstring injury), but rarely do so.
To answer to OP. The purpose of the liner is (for gentlemen) to stop your old fella from popping out of the shorts leg when you are sitting/collapsing/bending down etc. And to provide some added modesty when your shorts get wet.
Undies are completely redundant in this scenario.
Cant stand the liners. I cut them out and wear compression shorts under running shorts. I like the extra support
Tom Petty said it best:
And I’m free, free ballin’
Yeah I’m free, free ballin’
.
When I first purchased a bike to start triathlons in 2009, I was wearing underwear under my bike shorts. Luckily I figured that one out before discovering SlowTwitch and asking the question. But I’m the guy who still wears underwear under running shorts even with a liner…
Only when running below 40 degrees- find a good running brief to keep things warm.

Hey I’m not the only one!
I usually wear boxer briefs. I cut the liners out of all but my winter shorts to save some bulk and rubbing.
Good liner → just the running shorts
Skimpy liner that doesn’t provide support and chaffing protection → compression or “sprinter” shorts under the running shorts.
Normal cotton underwear? - not a chance in hell

Same, but liner quality varies… I have 2XU compression liners built in 2XU shorts, those are great. But stuff like Nike running shorts, the liner is ok the first month or two, then it stretches and is not as great. Others the liner is just a mesh that barely holds anything. I never considered the option of cutting the liner and using standalone compression shorts…
Always use balls cream in summer. Always. Always…

yes usually, I just stumbled upon Saxx Kinetic Boxers at TJ Maxx (at 4$)!!! they’re the best damn compression running boxers I have ever tried. google it.
they usually run about 25-30$ everywhere else. I keep preaching about buying uber expensive socks at marshalls as well…

I’m the exact same. I hate the liners and their lack of support and compression shorts prevent thigh chaffing.
