Do you wear spikes or track workouts

How many of you wear running spikes for your track workouts???

Hell no. Unless you are a HS or college track athlete. I’m sure they won’t be the limiting factor to your speed workouts. Flats will be fine.

Brought 'em out of hibernation once for a mile test on a slippery dirt track. Almost no need on a modern synthetic track.

Nope, only time I would ever take them out again is for a XC race or a track race under 5k.

I tried a pair on at the weekend, first time since college, it felt absolutely awesome. Perhaps a motivational tool to get to the track and use them. I’ve seriously never run on a track without spikes as in college and at my running club they were obligatory. I guess the old ways are disappearing.

Most College track teams don’t even use spikes in work outs, unless they are doing strides or pre-race. It’s like wearing your aero helmet out on a training ride, totally unnecessary. Do you ever race in spikes, hopefully not. I’d stick to the racing flats for speed work.

really? is this a serious question? Yes you should wear spikes for track workouts… and you should wear them for your distance workouts that are at high threshold too just like in XC.

Someone once said to me to “practice how you play”. It took me some time to fully understand but it is a true statement. So if you have a goal race like a track 3000m or cross country race than train in spikes, otherwise stick to your flats. The main idea with spikes during our cross season is to ‘get used to’ or allow your legs to adapt to the difference of the spikes. Maybe that’s just the methodology of my coach but it makes sense to me.

If your goal race not wetsuit legal than you would want to do non-wetsuit OWSs before, right? Just sayin!

Like I said in my last post “the old ways (of wearing spikes) are disappearing”. I guess I have to repeat myself for you, we’d already established that nobody wears them anymore. Thanks for the ridiculous analogy also.

It depends on the length of the interval. If I’m running 200’s or 400’s i’m more likely to lace up the spikes, anything longer and I’m sticking with the trainers. You should be wearing spikes occasionally if you plan on racing in them (xc or track), if not why tear up your legs?

I should probably wear a wetsuit at every swim practice and my aero helmet and race wheel for every ride as well
.

Considering the fact that this is a Triathlon board where the least you race at is a 5k why would you be concerned with spikes for track workouts? Are you going out of T2 lacing up your spikes or better yet fitted your spikes with Yanks! I understand that doing track work is necessary for 5k speed… but why are you so concerned with the time difference between spikes and/or flats? Just get on the track, bust your ass and dont ask silly questions. If I am doing track work I want a lighter shoe for sure and a flat works perfect or a lightweight trainer. I cannot really remember using spikes for sprint work in high school or college.

I grew up training on a cinder track in England so for me track always meant spikes, and ultimately I’d like to be able to get the confidence back to run an event on the track. How do you find your workouts with spikes? Enjoy it or just tear up your legs (or both)?

put the caffeine down (and whatever else you’re taking)

I enjoy running my shorter intervals in spikes and I do think it helps the legs get used to a quicker turn over. My legs aren’t usually torn up after using them but I do pick and choose when they are necessary. I’m probably a little different then most people on this board though b/c I am transitioning into the sport of triathlon from 9 years of only running. I would compare the use of spikes to the use of fins and paddles in the pool, even though you aren’t using them to race they help you improve.

I vote no. Even in HS and college track back when I was more durable spikes were reserved for meets and run-offs. In fairness the spikes back then were less protective than those available today.

I also remember how nice it was when the railroad got built so we didn’t have to take the Stage Coach to meets.

for sure man, o and I cant remember the name of this new stuff I have been taking but I think its called “Hard Work” mixed with some sweat and good music…

which reminds me I better hit the track tonight and remember to not leave the house without my spikes because I am going to try to get my splits .34 seconds faster

haven’t worn spikes in 10 years.
