Do you travel with a pump?

Do you take a floor pump on destination race trips?

I have a silca pump i love abd trust but seems like a headache to travel with.

What’s a good alternative?

No, I travel with a different kind of pump, if you know what I mean.

Sorry.

A good alternative? A simple pump and, separately, a good calibrated pressure gauge.
Some bike boxes will allow a track pump to be jigsawed in.

I use an electric pump from Amazon. I air up tires to about 60 psi in transition a day before and use the electric pump to air up fully on the race day morning. I think I paid about $40? It’s as big as your hand and so compact and rechargeable. Get it and you will love it.

You never know when you’ll need one. I travel with a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive HV: https://ride.lezyne.com/products/1-mp-mfdr-v204hv . They hold a high pressure and will be enough to get you started from your hotel to T1! I highly recommend them.

Always. Hate relying on others or support pumps.

I take my Fumpa rechargeable pump.

My Specialized floor pump is flaking paint and the head is about done and am considering this. Which one? Any complaints to look out for?

What I like about these is the idea they can pump to a manually set value then stop.

There was a thread here on ST and someone recommended this one. No complaints at all. It works great and battery life is more than enough for race day morning. Preset the pressure and it stops when it’s done. I hated carrying the big ass pump and this was a game changer for me. I highly recommend it.

+1 to this type of electric pump. This is what I bring to all races.

Why headache? I always take my floorpump. It fits in any car, and I took it numerous times in my bikebox on flights (ok, you have to solve the puzzle of packing the bikebox, which works with my combo of box, bike and pump).

Was just looking at that one. Are you able to use it on smooth presta valves or extensions? Do you use some other adapter or hose? Looks like it comes with one of those schrader to presta adapter, but they need threads on the presta valve stem.

That is correct and all of my bikes has threads on the presta valve stems, so I have no problem using it. I have a rear disc and it works well with crack pipe too and of course, the crack pipe has threads. I don’t think I’ve seen presta valves without the threads because they usually come with the caps, right?

The caps thread onto the valve core, which is threaded. Most extensions (if not all) I’ve seen are smooth. I’ve also gotten some smooth long-stem tubes (still with a threaded valve core) from Continental.

That’s what you need. Threads on the valve core. Adaptor that comes with the pump threads onto the valve core.

Those mini electric pumps look great! Thanks for the tip.

I was eye-balling this one due to the larger battery capacity & aluminum casing:
Amazon.com: CYCPLUS A8 Portable Tire Pump Smart Air Inflator Electric Mini Air Compressor with 2*2600mAh Rechargeable Battery and Type-c Port for Car Bicycle Motorcycle and Balls (Grey) : Automotive

If you click the link you’ll see it comes with a “thread onto the valve stem” hose. Anyone have any feedback on if the thread-on hoses work with disc wheel valve access ports?

If not, I saw these offered separately, but it doesn’t look like they work with the A8 series (verification question into CYCPLUS but haven’t heard back yet):
Amazon.com: CYCPLUS Air Tube Hose Accessories for A2 A3 A5 Air Compressor 2 pcs : Tools & Home Improvement

If those don’t work, maybe either the one linked earlier (rather than the A8) or does anyone know if there’s another end that could be a solution on these CYCPLUS hoses. Maybe something like this:

You never know when you’ll need one. I travel with a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive HV: https://ride.lezyne.com/...cts/1-mp-mfdr-v204hv . They hold a high pressure and will be enough to get you started from your hotel to T1! I highly recommend them.
I second this, I picked one up because it’s small and light and can easily slip it in my bike bag, and it works way better than a hand pump at a fraction of the size or weight of a full sized floor pump…

I have this one and love it. It even comes with a disc wheel adapter. It fits easily either in my bike back or even my suitcase. It will go up to 160 psi.

People rave about the Fumpa pumps, but Amazon has a ton of pumps like the one you linked to that are just so much cheaper and seemingly just as functional. I bought one last month to bring to a race and it works just fine. The pressure was accurate when checked with a handheld gauge.

Oops! Actually, that’s probably the one that I have. I remember having looked for a high-pressure pump that had a small form factor. It’s amazing what that tiny pump can do.

I’ve got this one as well but the hose is ridiculously short. If they found a way to add another 8 inches to the pump hose it would be infinitely better. But a solid pump. The handle isn’t the most comfortable to push down on either so maybe use a towel over it as you near the higher pressure. It is pretty bullet proof though and fits nicely into a regular backpack. When you can’t take a CO2 on the plane and won’t be near a bike shop or have room for a large pump, this is the perfect solution to get you through & works well with disks, even a Zipp with their tiny cut out for the valve stems.
