Do you take supplements?

I am starting into Triathlons (Started last summer). I am working on a program of lifting weights and cardio training. My goal is to loose weight and tone up (I am 6’1" 233pds). I read the Body for Life book and started taking Myoplex light but have since noticed it uses Sacrin and I dont like that chemical sweetner. I am looking for a supplement to take that will help me tone up without gaining weight. I actually would like to get back down to 210 lbs. Just wondering what others thoughts are.

swim, run, and bike a lot. you will get nice and trim. I don’t really think all those supplements are necessary.

Supplements aren’t necessary. I take a multivitamin but that’s it.

Good luck with your weight loss goals.

I’m 6’0 and was 230 a few years ago. Train, watch what you eat, train, then train some more.

I’m now down to 183 after bulking up to 190 in the off season. My race day weight (June) will be around 170-175, and I will probably stay between 170-180 for the rest of the season.

I do use supplements, but just whey protein, BCAA’s and multivitamins.

.

Swim,Bike ,Run and take in less calories than you expand(create a calorie deficit).

Stay away from weights and use your own body weight instead.

My definition of supplements may be different than others but I classify supplements as any non “food” item which is vague and I use loosely but I consider energy bars, drinks, gels, beans, etcl as nutritional supplements because we are supplementing our eating program with them before, during and after training.

What I don’t recommend are any supplements (pills, powders, potions) that promise quick-fixes, have no science behind them, use testimonials, etc…you see my point.

I personally use a host of “supplements” throughout the year including Gatorade, First Endurance EFS, First Endurance Ultragen, First Endurance Multi-V, salt tablets, Clif Bars, Lara Bars, Perfect 10 Bars, Carbbooms, Accel Gel (for ultraendurance running), Clif Shot Electrolyte Drink, and Clif Shots.

Be careful using the products that I define as “supplements” in a weight loss regimen though since they add more on the caloric intake side. If you are trying to lose weight and supplementing with bars, gels, drinks on rides/runs, then you will most likely not reach your weight goal…

Well, I’ll assume this is a legit question and answer it.

So you don’t like sacchrine, sucralose, ace-K and the like? Then you won’t find any type of shake that will suit your preferences.

But you don’t need it.

The only supplements you need are varying forms of steel, titanium, aluminum, or carbon. Along with some rubber, EVA, nylon and the like. Oh, and chlorine.

Get training and let your body adapt slowly. Let your activity dictate the body you have.

I have a friend who uses something called Optygen (sp) and swears by it. He says at the top of long climbs hes not as tired and recovers faster for the next climb or sprint and after hard workouts he feels okay and not as spent. I personally have never tried any of them other than Centrum every morning. When my PED taking friends can beat me then I’ll consider it.

Many endurance athletes that compete at a very high level take some form (or multiple forms) or ergogenic aids or “supplements.” The problem is what will work for them might not work for you. Also if it works for them they might not want to share it with you. For undertrained athletes, some supplements will never get anything better than junk science commentary. For highly trained athletes the same supplements are highly effective and this group will swear by them.

Be as skeptical about those who say supplements are useless as you are about those who are endorsing a silver bullet.

I take Whey protien w/ BCAA’s and L-Glutamine. I lift weights sporactically. I was using creatine during the off season, but I wanted to drop some of the water weight. I feel the protein helps out during recovery. I am 6’4" 170lb

Beyond the gels and multi-vitamin as mentioned by the other posters.

I’ll sware by Champion Nutritions Metabol Endurance. I’ve also started using Clif Bars Recovery drink…

I mainly use them for 2 reasons:

  1. Recovery from workouts, that 30min to 2 hour recovery window when uptake is so important… these products supply the system with what’s needed. (and yes I use the Metabol for post workout calories though it’s marketed for pre workout).

  2. I seldom have the time to get a balanced intake from normal foods after long workouts (at least within that window), so a glass and a spoon and bam the nutrients are going to work.
