Do you realise you're swimming in the world's biggest volcano

when you do the nz ironman? lake taupo is the biggest volcano in the world and is also proud to have the biggest eruption ever.

oh and it could erupt at any time
.

I suppose you’d have a great view if it did erupt while swimming.

Bigger than Yellowstone?

Probably cleanest water for an ironman swim also.

Are you claiming this by measuring the diameter of the cone? I would think Mauna Loa is largest in total size considering diameter of it’s base and peak height.

thanks fulla…I will try to bear that in mind this saturday!

Doesn’t mean it warms up the water, tho’ ! Good luck Saturday, guys.

Cheers

Barry

Good luck Saturday kiwipat!! Don’t freeze in the lake and have a blast at the prize giving. The Taupo Half is one of my fondest memories.

I thought that Yellowstone was the biggest. Scientists Knew that Yellowstone was volcanic, but they never found the cone. It wasn’t a big deal, they just figured it was buried. Then NASA sent some satellite photos to the rangers to a favor. They figured they would make nice decorations. A visiting geologist saw the photos and realized that the reason they could never find the cone was because the entire park is one big cone. Whenb yellostone blows its going to be one heckova cleanup ;-).

Bigger than Yellowstone?

There is no agreement on what was the greatest volcanic eruption on the geological record. The most likely candidates are Taupo, Toba in Sumatra and Yellowstone.

These were much greater than anything we have on recent record. These would dwarf the 1980 (82?) Mount St-Helens eruption. We are talking thousands of cubic km of material ejected.

Bigger than Yellowstone?

What about Jellystone?

I am not positive but I think that Yellowstone was actually a Metor strike not a volcano - recent studies show chains of quartz that can only happen with a high velocity impact, not a volcanic eruption. I love the Discovery Channel.

They showed something about that a while ago on The Discovery Channel. It dealt with supervolcanoes especially in that area. They showed how much damage it would actually do and what could happen at any time. They basically said it’s a giant zit ready to pop.

Yellowstone is a caldera or supervolcano. A huge bulging dome shaped lake of magma under the earth’s crust. When it blows nobody will be around to talk about it…at least nobody in North America.

It has been estimated that when the Yellowstone caldera erupts it will generate enough ash to bury New York City to a depth of 16 feet.

I think its also 40,000-50,000 years past due.

(I’m a font of absolutely useless information…they call me Google in my local pub quiz team)

Olympus Mons on Mars kicks all these “puny” volcanoes’ asses. A peak three times the height of Everest and base as wide as the entire Hawaiian island chain. Sure, it’s dormant today, but back in the day that thing could pump out the boiling hot lava for hundreds of miles.

Does this mean that NZ’s swim is like hundreds (thousands?) of feet deep???

I couldn’t say exaclty how deep it is, but you can see the bottom the entire time. In fact, it makes swimming straight very easy because the lines in the sand are parallel to the swim course. I’d guess 30 feet or so, golf balls look about the size of a dime.

nah its not deep where the swim is held.

Bigger than Yellowstone?

What about Jellystone?

I don’t go to Jellystone - I keep losing my pic-a-nick basket!

Does this mean that NZ’s swim is like hundreds (thousands?) of feet deep???

Yeah–you probably won’t be able to “touch” in some places.
